Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior technicians in the installation, termination, and maintenance of fiber optic and copper cable infrastructure in both underground and aerial settings.
  • Learn and perform fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables, ensuring that splices meet or exceed company and industry standards for signal loss.
  • Gain proficiency in operating specialized test equipment, including Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), Visual Fault Locators (VFL), and optical power meters, to verify and troubleshoot connectivity.
  • Support the diagnosis and repair of network issues, tracing signal paths to identify faults in cables, splices, or other passive network components.
  • Develop the ability to read and accurately interpret network maps, blueprints, engineering diagrams, and work orders to determine job specifications and requirements.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on network junctions, splice cases, and cabinets to ensure their long-term integrity and environmental protection.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all work performed, including splice details, test results, and as-built documentation, using digital tools and platforms.
  • Strictly adhere to all company, local, state, and federal (OSHA) safety regulations and procedures to ensure a safe work environment for yourself, your team, and the public.
  • Operate a company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner, maintaining its cleanliness and performing routine vehicle inspections.
  • Assist in managing on-vehicle inventory of tools, equipment, and materials, ensuring necessary supplies are stocked and accounted for before heading to a job site.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work safely and efficiently in diverse physical environments, including confined spaces, at heights on ladders or in bucket trucks, and during inclement weather.
  • Act as a reliable assistant to senior technicians during complex network builds, emergency restorations, and critical system cutovers.
  • Prepare and stage all necessary tools, materials, and equipment for daily job assignments to maximize efficiency in the field.
  • Learn the process of locating and marking underground utilities to prevent damage during excavation and construction activities.
  • Assist with the placement and securing of physical network hardware, including conduit, innerduct, and various types of enclosures.
  • Verify signal integrity and quality of service post-installation or repair to confirm that all work meets the required performance benchmarks.
  • Respond to and support emergency outage restoration efforts under the direct supervision of a senior technician to quickly and safely restore customer services.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to network performance and field activities.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by providing feedback on field-level data collection tools and processes.
  • Collaborate with business units and network planning teams to translate data needs into engineering requirements from a field perspective.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Color Vision: Must have the ability to distinguish between a full spectrum of colors to work with color-coded wiring and fiber optic cables accurately.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: A natural proficiency with using a variety of hand tools (e.g., wrenches, pliers, wire strippers) and basic power tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Schematic Interpretation: The ability to learn to read and interpret technical documents, including blueprints, network topology maps, and splicing diagrams.
  • Driving Competency: Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record, and the ability to operate a commercial-style vehicle.
  • Physical Fitness: The physical capacity to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 75 lbs), work on your feet for extended periods, and perform tasks that require climbing, stooping, and kneeling.
