As a Junkyard Operator, you are the backbone of our automotive recycling and parts salvage operation. This isn't just about moving metal; it's about being a modern-day treasure hunter, skillfully identifying and extracting valuable components from end-of-life vehicles. You will be a key player in the circular economy, operating heavy equipment, using a variety of tools to dismantle cars, and ensuring that every reusable part is inspected, inventoried, and made available to our customers. This role requires a sharp eye for detail, a commitment to safety, and the physical ability to handle the demands of a busy salvage yard. You'll be working outdoors and indoors, collaborating with a team of technicians and sales staff to meet daily production goals and keep our inventory flowing.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate heavy machinery such as forklifts, wheel loaders, and material handlers to efficiently move, stack, and organize vehicles within the yard.
  • Systematically dismantle vehicles using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and cutting torches to safely and effectively remove requested parts.
  • Meticulously inspect and assess the condition of salvaged automotive parts, including engines, transmissions, and body panels, to determine their quality and reusability.
  • Accurately identify, tag, and enter part information (make, model, year, condition, location) into our computerized inventory management system.
  • Safely drain all fluids, including gasoline, oil, antifreeze, and refrigerant, from vehicles in accordance with environmental regulations and company safety protocols.
  • Assist both walk-in customers and internal sales staff in locating and pulling specific parts from vehicles in the yard, providing excellent service.
  • Perform daily pre-operation safety checks and routine preventative maintenance on all heavy equipment and tools to ensure they are in safe, working order.
  • Sort and segregate various scrap metals (steel, aluminum, copper, etc.) and other materials for recycling and processing.
  • Evaluate incoming end-of-life vehicles upon arrival to determine their potential for parts salvage versus being processed directly for scrap.
  • Utilize our digital inventory system to efficiently locate specific vehicles within the yard designated for dismantling.
  • Prepare salvaged parts for sale and shipping, which includes cleaning, packaging, and labeling to company standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by clearing pathways, properly storing tools, and adhering to all safety procedures.
  • Operate a car crusher or baler to process vehicle hulls after all valuable parts and hazardous materials have been removed.
  • Test mechanical and electrical components (e.g., starters, alternators, radios) to verify functionality before they are placed into inventory.
  • Use a plasma cutter or Sawzall to precisely cut sections of vehicle frames or bodies to salvage specific structural components.
  • Load and unload trucks with salvaged parts, scrap metal, and incoming vehicles, ensuring proper weight distribution and securement.
  • Respond promptly to parts requests from the sales counter, prioritizing pulls based on customer needs and sales urgency.
  • Identify and remove catalytic converters, batteries, and tires, sorting them into designated areas for specialized processing or resale.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to completing tasks regardless of the environment.
  • Collaborate with the team to meet daily and weekly production targets for vehicle processing and parts pulling.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the inventory control team with periodic cycle counts and full physical inventory audits to ensure system accuracy.
  • Provide valuable feedback to the vehicle purchasing department regarding the quality and demand for parts from specific makes and models.
  • Actively participate in daily safety meetings, report potential hazards, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of our safety culture and protocols.
  • Help train new yard employees on proper dismantling techniques, safe equipment operation, and company procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating forklifts, wheel loaders, and excavators with material handling attachments.
  • Automotive Systems Knowledge: Strong understanding of major vehicle components, including engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and electrical systems.
  • Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the use of a wide range of automotive hand tools, power tools (impact wrenches, Sawzalls), and cutting equipment (plasma cutters, acetylene torches).
  • Vehicle Dismantling: Proven ability to efficiently and safely take apart vehicles without damaging valuable components.
  • Parts Identification: Ability to accurately identify vehicle makes, models, years, and specific parts.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Experience with or ability to quickly learn inventory management software for data entry and look-up.
  • Safety & Environmental Compliance: Knowledge of proper hazardous material handling (fluids, batteries, refrigerants) and workplace safety standards (OSHA).
  • Welding/Cutting: Basic experience in torch cutting or welding is highly desirable for part extraction and scrap processing.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a vocational or technical college.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years

Preferred:

  • Direct experience working in an automotive salvage yard, auto repair shop, or a related industrial environment.
  • Verifiable experience operating heavy machinery is strongly preferred.
  • A solid background as a mechanic or auto technician provides a significant advantage.
