Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform complex installations, configurations, and testing of in-vehicle computer systems, including rugged laptops, docking stations, and peripheral devices in law enforcement and government vehicles.
  • Execute the end-to-end installation and maintenance of digital in-car video recording systems, body-worn cameras, and their associated evidence management hardware and docking solutions.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex hardware, software, and network connectivity issues for mobile data terminals (MDTs) and other field-deployed technologies, often under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostic tests and perform component-level repairs on a wide range of electronic equipment, including GPS units, cellular modems, mobile printers, and specialized sensors.
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of vehicle technology installations, from initial vehicle teardown and custom wiring to final system validation, quality assurance checks, and user sign-off.
  • Systematically execute preventative maintenance schedules on all department-issued field technology to ensure optimal performance, data integrity, and to minimize operational downtime.
  • Provide direct on-site and remote technical support to law enforcement officers, investigators, and other justice personnel, demonstrating professionalism and patience in high-pressure scenarios.
  • Maintain meticulous and detailed records of all service calls, installations, repairs, and inventory changes utilizing a centralized ticketing and asset management system.
  • Develop, refine, and maintain comprehensive documentation for standard installation procedures, common troubleshooting guides, and system configuration best practices.
  • Professionally decommission and sanitize electronic equipment from retired vehicles, ensuring strict data security protocols are followed and assets are properly disposed of or redeployed.
  • Perform rigorous quality assurance checks on all completed work to guarantee compliance with departmental standards, manufacturer specifications, and vehicle safety protocols.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate, just-in-time inventory of spare parts, replacement units, tools, and equipment necessary for field repairs and installations.
  • Collaborate effectively with third-party vehicle upfitters, vendors, and manufacturers to ensure seamless integration of law enforcement technology packages into new and existing fleet vehicles.
  • Provide foundational user training and orientation to officers and staff on the proper operation, daily care, and basic troubleshooting of new and existing field technology.
  • Travel regularly to various police precincts, substations, courthouses, and other government facilities to perform on-site service, installations, and support as required.
  • Respond to mission-critical, emergency service requests and participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to provide support for 24/7/365 public safety operations.
  • Safely operate and maintain a company-provided service vehicle, ensuring it is well-organized and adequately stocked with necessary tools, parts, and safety equipment.
  • Assist senior staff and engineers with the evaluation, field testing, and pilot deployment of new technologies and solutions designed to enhance officer safety and operational efficiency.
  • Skillfully run, terminate, and secure various types of cabling, including power (DC), data (Ethernet), and antenna (coaxial) wiring within vehicles and fixed facilities.
  • Interface with backend server infrastructure and network administrators to troubleshoot issues related to data transfer, synchronization, and connectivity from field devices.
  • Ensure all technical installations and repairs maintain the integrity and safety of the vehicle's original electrical, structural, and safety systems (e.g., airbag zones).
  • Adhere to and promote strict evidence handling protocols when servicing or transporting devices that may contain sensitive or evidentiary digital data.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to equipment performance and failure rates.
  • Contribute to the organization's public safety technology strategy and long-term equipment roadmap.
  • Collaborate with business units and command staff to translate operational data needs into technical engineering requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency with 12V DC automotive electrical systems, including diagnosing issues, wiring, using relays, and understanding circuit protection.
  • Strong diagnostic and root-cause analysis skills for computer hardware (rugged laptops, tablets) and software (Windows OS, proprietary public safety applications).
  • Hands-on experience with mobile communication technologies, including cellular modems (e.g., Cradlepoint), GPS/GNSS, and Wi-Fi/WLAN systems.
  • Proven hands-on ability to install, repair, and maintain a variety of electronic equipment, often requiring fine soldering, crimping, and the use of specialized tools.
  • Functional knowledge of basic networking principles (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN) as they apply to mobile and field-deployed environments.
