Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive legal research on complex criminal law issues, including statutory interpretation, case law analysis, and constitutional questions to support motions, briefs, and trial strategy.
- Draft a wide range of legal documents under attorney supervision, such as motions in limine, responses to defense motions, appellate briefs, indictments, and legal memoranda.
- Assist prosecutors with all phases of trial preparation, including organizing voluminous case files, preparing exhibit lists and demonstrative aids, and developing lines of questioning for direct and cross-examination.
- Review and analyze discovery materials, including police reports, forensic evidence, witness statements, and body-worn camera footage, to identify case strengths, weaknesses, and key evidence.
- Observe and actively participate in various court proceedings, such as arraignments, preliminary hearings, motion arguments, plea negotiations, and jury trials.
- Under supervision and pursuant to student practice rules, present arguments in court for non-complex matters like bail hearings, misdemeanor arraignments, or traffic court dockets.
- Interact directly with victims and witnesses to gather essential information, provide case status updates, and assist in their preparation for court testimony, ensuring a professional and compassionate approach.
- Analyze and summarize grand jury testimony and other witness interviews to create outlines and reports for the assigned prosecutor.
- Assist in the evaluation of potential criminal cases by reviewing initial police reports and arrest affidavits to determine if sufficient evidence exists for charging.
- Prepare and organize trial binders, ensuring all necessary documents, exhibits, and notes are readily accessible for prosecutors during court proceedings.
- Aid in the jury selection process by researching potential jurors, drafting voir dire questions, and taking notes during jury selection.
- Respond to defense discovery requests by gathering, redacting sensitive information from, and producing relevant documents and evidence in a timely manner.
- Attend and document plea negotiation conferences and pre-trial meetings with defense counsel, summarizing discussions and outcomes for the case file.
Secondary Functions
- Support the screening and intake of new criminal cases, performing initial case assessments and data entry into the case management system.
- Assist in responding to post-conviction motions by researching applicable law and drafting initial responses for attorney review.
- Help maintain and organize the office's legal research database, precedent files, and motion banks for future use.
- Collaborate with law enforcement officers and investigators to follow up on pending investigations and gather additional evidence as needed.
- Prepare detailed summaries and chronologies of events for complex cases involving multiple defendants or extensive timelines.
- Participate in internal case review meetings, offering insights and observations on assigned cases to the prosecution team.
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to crime trends or case dispositions.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by helping to ensure accurate case data entry and reporting.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:

A second-year (2L) or third-year (3L) law student at an ABA-accredited law school, demonstrating a strong academic record.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
0-1 years of legal experience. No prior internship experience is required, but it is considered a plus.
