Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive and systematic literature reviews across academic, legal, and governmental sources to synthesize existing knowledge and identify key gaps in current justice research.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of diverse research methodologies, including surveys, focus groups, and structured interviews with a range of stakeholders such as law enforcement, court personnel, attorneys, and justice-involved individuals.

  • Meticulously clean, manage, and structure large quantitative and qualitative datasets to ensure accuracy, consistency, and readiness for analysis, often involving data from multiple, disparate sources.
  • Execute preliminary quantitative data analysis, including running descriptive statistics, frequencies, and cross-tabulations using statistical software like SPSS, Stata, or R.
  • Support qualitative data analysis by coding transcripts, identifying key themes, and extracting illustrative quotes and case examples using software such as NVivo or Dedoose.
  • Contribute to the drafting, editing, and formatting of research deliverables, including in-depth reports, policy briefs, academic journal articles, and grant proposals.
  • Perform meticulous fact-checking and cite-checking for all publications and external communications to uphold the organization's standards of accuracy and academic integrity.
  • Develop compelling data visualizations, such as charts, graphs, infographics, and maps, to clearly communicate complex research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prepare detailed summaries, memos, and backgrounders on relevant legislation, court rulings, academic studies, and policy changes to keep the research team informed of developments in the field.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for research projects, including scheduling interviews and meetings, maintaining project timelines, and taking detailed notes during team discussions.
  • Assist in preparing materials for Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions and ensure all research activities adhere to ethical guidelines and protocols for human subjects research.
  • Help organize and prepare for meetings, webinars, and conferences by developing slide decks, talking points, and other presentation materials.
  • Maintain and organize project documentation, research archives, and extensive databases, ensuring that information is easily accessible and securely stored.
  • Respond to internal and external requests for information, data, and sources related to ongoing and past research projects.
  • Monitor news outlets and policy forums to track the real-world impact and public reception of the team's research findings.
  • Collaborate with communications teams to help translate dense research findings into accessible content for websites, social media, and press releases.
  • Assist in the grant-writing process by gathering background information, compiling required data, and helping to draft narrative sections for proposals and reports to funders.
  • Coordinate with external partners, including academic institutions, government agencies, and community-based organizations, to facilitate data sharing and collaborative research efforts.
  • Transcribe and summarize audio recordings of interviews, focus groups, and stakeholder meetings with a high degree of accuracy and attention to nuance.

Required Skills & Competencies
