Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Under direct supervision, learn and apply procedures for the proper collection, preservation, and documentation of physical evidence from non-complex incidents.
  • Receive, log, and securely store property and evidence, meticulously maintaining the chain of custody from intake to final disposition.
  • Perform accurate and timely data entry of reports, citations, and case information into a variety of law enforcement databases and Records Management Systems (RMS).
  • Learn to operate and perform basic maintenance on technical equipment, such as digital cameras, fingerprint scanners, evidence processing tools, and two-way radios.
  • Assist sworn officers and investigators by preparing case files, organizing evidentiary materials, and running preliminary database queries.
  • Capture and process high-quality fingerprints from individuals for background checks, court orders, or identification purposes using both ink and live scan methods.
  • Respond to non-emergency calls for service and provide information and assistance to the public, both in person and over the phone, in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Prepare and author clear, concise, and grammatically correct initial reports, evidence logs, and supplemental narratives for review by a supervisor.
  • Transcribe audio and video recordings of witness interviews, suspect interrogations, and other official proceedings with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Conduct quality control checks on data and reports entered by self and others to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with departmental standards.
  • Process and route legal documents, such as subpoenas, warrants, and court orders, ensuring they reach the appropriate personnel in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain and purge sensitive records according to strict legal mandates, departmental policies, and retention schedules.
  • Attend and actively participate in all required classroom and field training sessions, demonstrating a progressive understanding of concepts and practical skills.
  • Learn to prepare photographic and digital evidence for courtroom presentation, including printing, mounting, and creating digital media copies.
  • Under guidance, may be called upon to provide factual, foundational testimony in court regarding the handling and processing of evidence or records.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine inventory and ordering of supplies for evidence processing, records management, and general office needs.
  • Assist in conducting background investigations by gathering, verifying, and compiling personal history information from various sources.
  • Provide support to the front desk or public counter, including directing visitors, answering general inquiries, and accepting fee payments.
  • Conduct basic research on individuals, locations, and vehicles using approved local, state, and federal criminal justice information systems.
  • Prepare and disseminate routine statistical reports, activity summaries, and data dashboards for internal review and public information requests.
  • Assist in the setup and operation of audio-visual equipment for meetings, training sessions, and community presentations.
  • Participate in special projects and assignments as directed by a supervisor, such as assisting with departmental audits or system upgrades.
