Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive academic instruction in a classroom environment covering all KC-135 aircraft systems, including power plant, hydraulics, electrical, fuel, and flight controls.
- Provide expert flight instruction in advanced Aircrew Training Devices (ATD), such as Full Flight Simulators (FFS), for normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures.
- Develop, deliver, and refine mission-relatable training scenarios that challenge students and reinforce critical decision-making skills in a controlled environment.
- Operate the Instructor Operating Station (IOS) to manipulate the training environment, introduce system malfunctions, and manage simulated tactical scenarios effectively.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on all aspects of KC-135 flight operations, including performance, weight and balance, and mission planning.
- Provide detailed, constructive pre-briefings before each training event and comprehensive post-flight debriefings to analyze performance and reinforce learning objectives.
- Evaluate and formally document student progress, performance, and skill competency in accordance with established training syllabi and regulatory standards.
- Administer and score written examinations and performance-based evaluations to certify student proficiency and readiness.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate training records, ensuring all student and instructor logs are current and compliant with USAF and company policies.
- Instruct and evaluate air-to-air refueling (AAR) procedures, techniques, and emergency breakaway maneuvers with a high degree of fidelity.
- Teach advanced instrument flight, international navigation procedures, and oceanic crossings specific to the KC-135's global mission profile.
- Champion and integrate Crew Resource Management (CRM) and Threat and Error Management (TEM) principles into all phases of training.
- Ensure the highest levels of safety are maintained during all training events by proactively managing the simulator environment and student actions.
- Stay current on all aircraft modifications, technical order (TO) changes, and operational directives to ensure training content is accurate and relevant.
- Provide remedial instruction and develop tailored training plans for students who require additional support to meet proficiency standards.
- Review, update, and contribute to the development of courseware, curriculum, lesson plans, and other training materials to reflect the latest operational doctrine.
- Collaborate with maintenance and engineering personnel to identify, document, and troubleshoot simulator discrepancies to ensure maximum device availability and fidelity.
- Conduct training on specialized mission sets, such as tactical arrivals/departures, aeromedical evacuation support, and operations in contested environments.
- Mentor students on professional development, leadership qualities, and the responsibilities inherent in being a pilot in the tanker community.
- Participate in formal course reviews, program audits, and curriculum development conferences to provide expert input for continuous improvement of the training program.
Secondary Functions
