Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist licensed therapists in administering a wide range of therapeutic exercises and functional activities designed to improve patient strength, range of motion, and mobility.
  • Guide patients through prescribed exercise routines, providing verbal cues, tactile feedback, and encouragement to ensure proper form and technique.
  • Prepare patients for therapy sessions by assisting them with transfers, positioning, and appropriate draping to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate therapeutic modalities and equipment, such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation units, hot/cold packs, and traction devices, as directed by the supervising therapist.
  • Monitor patients during therapy sessions, vigilantly observing their response to treatment, noting any signs of fatigue, pain, or adverse reactions, and immediately reporting them to the therapist.
  • Provide direct, hands-on assistance with ambulation, gait training, and the use of assistive devices like walkers, crutches, and canes.
  • Document specific, objective information regarding patient performance and progress in the medical record, following departmental and facility guidelines.
  • Transport patients safely to and from the therapy department, ensuring a smooth and timely transition for their scheduled appointments.
  • Educate patients and their families on the proper execution of simple home exercise programs, as delegated by the supervising therapist.
  • Perform routine checks on all therapy equipment to ensure it is in good working order and report any malfunctions or needs for repair.
  • Assist in fabricating and applying splints, braces, or other supportive devices under the close supervision of a qualified therapist.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the treatment areas, gym, and equipment rooms, adhering to strict infection control protocols.
  • Manage inventory of therapy supplies, including linens, lotions, and exercise bands, and communicate reordering needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Perform various clerical duties, such as answering telephones, scheduling patient appointments, and managing patient check-in and check-out processes.
  • Prepare and file patient charts, ensuring all necessary documentation and signatures are present and accounted for.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis by pulling simple reports on patient volume or appointment statistics.
  • Contribute to the organization's patient safety initiatives by actively participating in environmental rounds and safety huddles.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, including nurses, physicians, and case managers, to facilitate coordinated patient care.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, in-service training, and continuing education opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
