We are seeking a dependable Kitchen Cabinet Installer Assistant to work alongside experienced cabinet installers on kitchen remodels and new construction projects. The assistant will perform measuring, material handling, basic cutting and assembly, fastening, leveling, and finishing tasks to ensure cabinets are installed accurately, safely, and on schedule. This is a hands-on role geared toward candidates who want to build a career in cabinetry, carpentry, and kitchen installation.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist lead installers in laying out cabinet plans on-site by accurately measuring walls, verifying levels and plumbs, and marking reference lines to ensure cabinet runs fit design specifications.
  • Prepare job sites by protecting floors, removing existing cabinetry and fixtures when required, and staging new cabinets, hardware, and tools for efficient installation.
  • Unload, inspect, and stage cabinet boxes and components from deliveries, checking for transit damage, verifying counts against packing lists, and reporting discrepancies to the project lead.
  • Assemble cabinet boxes, face frames, and carcasses in accordance with shop instructions and manufacturer assembly guides while maintaining alignment and squareness.
  • Cut and alter cabinet components, filler strips, and trim pieces using table saws, circular saws, jigsaws and routers to create custom fits for irregular walls and obstacles.
  • Secure base and wall cabinets to studs and blocking using appropriate fasteners and anchors, and shim, level, and align units to achieve a uniform reveal and consistent cabinet line.
  • Install doors, drawers, hinges, soft-close mechanisms, slides, catches and other cabinet hardware; make preliminary adjustments to ensure smooth operation and even gaps.
  • Collaborate on countertop templating and seam placement, support the countertop installer with blocking, cabinet reinforcement, and seam alignment to ensure proper countertop fit and support.
  • Apply finish carpentry touches including toe kicks, crown molding, light valances, end panels and scribe molding, cutting and fitting trim to achieve a finished appearance.
  • Perform minor repair and touch-up work such as filling screw holes, light sanding, minor veneer or laminate repairs, and applying finish materials as directed by the lead.
  • Read and interpret installation drawings, elevation plans, and manufacturer instructions to follow project specifications and maintain installation quality standards.
  • Execute precise leveling and squaring of tall cabinets, pantry units, and tall towers, ensuring door alignment and that pull-out mechanisms operate without binding.
  • Assist with in-field modifications for plumbing and electrical access, cutting access panels and pre-drilling clearance holes where necessary while coordinating with trades to avoid conflicts.
  • Use measuring tools (tape, laser level, square), power tools, hand tools and shop equipment safely while following company and manufacturer safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout each phase of installation, responsibly disposing of packaging materials and debris at job completion.
  • Communicate proactively with the lead installer and project manager regarding unknown site conditions, material shortages, or potential scheduling impacts.
  • Follow quality control checklists and participate in final inspections to document punch-list items, mark required corrections and assist in resolving customer concerns.
  • Assist in measuring and preparing material take-offs for purchase orders, notifying the office of missing parts, hardware, or damaged components to minimize installation delays.
  • Accurately record daily time, job progress, and any material usage or rework in the company’s job-tracking system as requested.
  • Demonstrate and obey safe ladder use, fall protection, and workplace safety procedures, immediately reporting incidents and near-misses to the supervisor.
  • Support delivery drivers and movers by lifting, carrying and positioning cabinets, appliances and hardware safely while following proper lifting techniques and team-lift requirements.
  • Perform routine maintenance of tools and small equipment, flagging broken or dull tools for repair or replacement to maintain productivity and installation quality.
  • Provide courteous customer-facing support when requested—explaining basic installation steps, confirming placement, and receiving customer feedback while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Participate in on-site training, shadowing, and mentoring with senior installers to develop installation proficiency and expand responsibility over time.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist project coordinators with site measurements and photos for pre-install surveys and estimates.
  • Support showroom staff by staging sample cabinets and helping customers visualize layout options when on-site availability allows.
  • Contribute suggestions for process improvements, safer work methods, and material handling efficiencies observed in the field.
  • Help manage small tool and hardware inventory in the van or shop, reporting low stock to the shop manager to ensure next jobs are fully outfitted.
  • Participate in weekly crew briefings and safety meetings, contributing observations from the field to improve team readiness.
  • Aid in warranty follow-up visits by identifying issues, documenting causes, and assisting in remedy under supervisor guidance.
  • Assist the purchasing team with minor reorders or part number confirmation for missing hardware and replacement pieces.
  • Provide cross-training support: learn and rotate through basic countertop templating, finishing or minor fabrication tasks to broaden skills.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Accurate site measuring and layout skills, including use of tape measures, laser distances, levels, and squares for cabinet runs and trim work.
  • Fundamental carpentry skills: ripping, cross-cutting, dadoing, and assembling cabinet components and trim with both hand tools and stationary power tools.
  • Proficient in installing cabinet hardware: hinges (overlay, inset, concealed), drawer slides, soft-close systems, and catches, making precise adjustments for function and fit.
  • Ability to level, shim and secure cabinets to structural framing using screws, anchors and blocking—knowledge of stud locations and wall reinforcement techniques.
  • Competency with common power tools and woodworking equipment (cordless drills, impact drivers, circular saws, routers, jigsaws, table saws, and routers) and safe operation practices.
  • Familiarity interpreting installation drawings, elevations, and manufacturer cut sheets to translate plans into on-site execution.
  • Basic countertop support and seam preparation knowledge, including adequate reinforcing and blocking for stone, laminate and solid-surface counters.
  • Experience with finish carpentry: fitting crown molding, toe kicks, scribe pieces, end panels and cornices for a complete installed look.
  • Proficiency in minor cabinet repair and finishing tasks: sanding, wood filler application, touch-up paint/stain, edge-banding and veneer repairs.
  • Job site math skills (fractions, decimals, unit conversions) and spatial reasoning for accurate cuts and layout scribing.
  • Knowledge of safe ladder setup, fall protection basics, and proper lifting techniques; OSHA 10 or equivalent safety training preferred.
  • Basic vehicle operation and van organization skills; valid driver’s license and clean driving record often required for delivery or multi-site travel.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED; demonstrated competence in basic math and reading technical instructions.

Preferred Education:

  • Trade school certificate, community college coursework, or apprenticeship in Carpentry, Cabinetmaking, or Woodworking Technology.
  • OSHA 10 safety certification or equivalent on-the-job safety training.

Typical Experience Range:
