Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Learn to interpret cabinet shop drawings, architectural plans and kitchen elevations to determine material lists, cut lists and fabrication sequences for custom and semi-custom cabinets.
  • Measure and layout cabinetry components precisely using tape measures, squares, calipers and templates, ensuring dimensional accuracy before cutting or machining.
  • Operate and assist with table saws, band saws, panel saws, miter saws, routers, shapers and jointers under supervision to cut parts to specified tolerances for cabinet boxes, doors and drawer fronts.
  • Perform joinery and assembly tasks such as doweling, biscuit joints, pocket screws, dadoes and rabbet joints to assemble cabinet carcasses and face frames to quality standards.
  • Build and assemble cabinet doors, drawer boxes and hardware assemblies, ensuring smooth operation and fit by checking clearances and making adjustments during assembly.
  • Support finish work including sanding, filling, staining, sealing and applying clear coats or paint, following product instructions and producing uniform finish quality consistent with shop standards.
  • Install edge-banding, laminates and veneers using heated rails, glue applicators and presses, ensuring seamless edges and consistent appearance for kitchen surfaces.
  • Prepare and install cabinet hardware including hinges, drawer slides, handles and soft-close mechanisms; adjust hardware for quiet, plumb and square operation.
  • Assist with CNC setup and operation, loading sheet goods and fixtures, and performing basic maintenance and quality checks on machine-cut components.
  • Participate in template and countertop layout support by creating jigs, patterns and measuring for accurate cutouts and overhangs for sinks and appliances.
  • Perform on-site cabinet installations under direction: shim, level, attach upper and lower cabinets, install backsplashes and fit cabinets to walls, floors and countertops while protecting finished surfaces.
  • Conduct quality inspections at multiple production stages to identify defects, measure tolerances and flag parts for rework, ensuring final assemblies meet customer and company specifications.
  • Learn and follow company-standard cutting lists, material utilization plans and waste minimization strategies to control costs and maximize yield from sheet goods.
  • Maintain clean and organized workstations, store materials properly, label parts, and stage jobs for efficient workflow between cutting, assembly and finishing areas.
  • Support inventory tracking and materials handling by maintaining stock levels of hardware, adhesives, fasteners and finishing supplies and reporting shortages to supervisors.
  • Adhere to stringent shop safety practices, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, dust collection systems and safe machine operation to reduce risk of injury and ensure a compliant work environment.
  • Assist with job-site coordination by communicating with installers, project managers and other trades to resolve fit issues, verify site conditions and adapt cabinet layouts when real-world conditions vary from plans.
  • Participate in training sessions and on-the-job mentoring programs to progressively learn advanced techniques: complex tapered cabinets, inset doors, frame-and-panel construction and full-access European-style cabinetry.
  • Document production progress and timekeeping accurately for assigned jobs, including job tickets, quality checklists and notes on required adjustments or customer requests.
  • Provide follow-up support for warranty repairs, cabinet adjustments and field touch-ups, traveling to customer sites as needed to correct installation issues and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Apply adhesives, fasteners and sealants correctly to ensure structural integrity and durability of cabinets exposed to kitchen humidity and everyday use.
  • Assist with custom modifications and one-off work such as appliance housings, pull-outs, spice racks and built-in pantry systems, translating customer or designer requests into shop solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and problem-solve fit and finish issues in collaboration with senior cabinetmakers, offering suggestions for remedial actions based on measurements and observed defects.
  • Learn to read and interpret product specifications, manufacturer hardware installation guides and architectural tolerances to ensure compliance during fabrication and installation.
  • Support the development and documentation of shop standards, templates and jigs that improve repeatability, quality and production throughput.

Secondary Functions

  • Shadow senior cabinetmaker or installer during client consultations to learn measurement verification and site assessment best practices.
  • Assist in maintaining and calibrating measuring instruments, power tools and CNC tooling to ensure ongoing production accuracy.
  • Help maintain compliance records for workplace safety training, tool inspections and material safety data sheets (MSDS).
  • Contribute to continuous improvement suggestions related to workflow, material usage and ergonomic tool setups.
  • Aid in packing, preparing and protecting completed cabinetry for delivery; coordinate with logistics for outbound shipments and on-site staging.
  • Provide timely feedback to production planners about recurring material defects or frequent rework causes to support supplier quality improvements.
  • Participate in apprenticeships, certification programs and trade school classes as directed to accelerate technical competency and credentials.
  • Support basic shop administrative tasks such as filing job folders, scanning blueprints and updating digital cut lists or nesting files.
