- Assist with mechanical anchoring and leveling of equipment using shims, anchors, and leveling tools to meet manufacturer tolerances and local health and safety codes for stable and sanitary operation.
- Help connect gas lines to appliances under direct supervision, following established procedures for correct fittings, flexible connectors, leak testing, and documentation; escalate and tag out any suspected gas leaks immediately.
- Support electrical hookups by routing conduit, pulling wire, connecting equipment to power per label and wiring diagrams, and assisting in verifying correct voltage and phase with a multimeter under the supervision of a qualified electrician or lead technician.
- Assist with plumbing and drain connections including trap assemblies, water supply lines, hose bibs, and grease trap tie-ins to ensure waste and wastewater compliance for commercial kitchens.
- Perform basic refrigeration and HVAC support tasks such as brazing or soldering copper lines (under supervision if certified), mounting condensers, helping evacuate and charge systems with refrigerant only when certified (EPA 608), and assisting in leak detection and system start-up procedures.
- Follow equipment manufacturer installation instructions and schematics precisely, documenting serial numbers, model numbers, and installation steps in the work order or digital service app for warranty and service history.
- Test-run and commission equipment with the lead technician: verify temperature controls, thermostat calibration, burner ignition, safety interlocks, wash cycles, condensate drainage, and proper ventilation hood capture; record test results and user parameters.
- Assist in troubleshooting simple mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration issues using hand tools and diagnostic devices; report complex faults to lead technicians and help implement corrective actions.
- Maintain hand and power tools, measuring instruments, and company vehicles; ensure tools are inspected, cleaned, organized, and reported lost or damaged immediately.
- Follow strict jobsite safety protocols including lockout/tagout, confined space awareness, ladder safety, PPE use, hot work permits, and adherence to OSHA, NFPA, local plumbing, gas, electrical and health code requirements at all times.
- Keep jobsite and staging areas clean and sanitary, dispose of packaging and old equipment responsibly, and coordinate with waste vendors for proper disposal or recycling of hazardous materials and appliances.
- Assist with on-site coordination: communicate with general contractors, electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors, kitchen designers, inspectors and customers to sequence work, manage punch lists and reduce downtime for foodservice operations.
- Provide customer-facing support during handover by demonstrating basic equipment operation, care instructions, simple troubleshooting steps, and ensuring customer satisfaction with placement and performance.
- Accurately complete time cards, material pick lists, parts requisitions and digital work order documentation to support billing, inventory control and warranty claims.
- Track and maintain installation materials and spare parts inventory on crew vehicle and in the warehouse; restock consumables and report shortages to the lead or dispatcher.
- Support warranty installations and replacement parts installations by reversing old units, verifying compatibility, and making modifications as directed by the service manager.
- Comply with company quality assurance and commissioning checklists to certify installations are complete, safe, and compliant with manufacturer and regulatory standards prior to sign-off.
- Respond to emergency service calls and after-hours tasks as needed, providing safe initial assessments and securing job sites until a lead technician or manager can complete repairs.
- Participate in on-the-job training, manufacturer certification courses and apprenticeship activities to expand mechanical, electrical and refrigeration competencies required for full installer responsibilities.
- Proactively suggest process and safety improvements to reduce installation time, minimize rework, and improve customer experience during foodservice equipment installs.
Secondary Functions
- Support inventory audits and parts procurement by preparing lists and coordinating small orders with suppliers and warehouses.
- Assist office staff by uploading photos, completing digital checklists, and ensuring all paperwork for installations is filed correctly.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by documenting common installation obstacles and suggested tool or procedural changes.
- Help with pre-installation site surveys and measurement checks when scheduling or resource constraints require additional field support.
- Provide light preventative maintenance tasks during off-hours or scheduled visits, such as cleaning filters, checking belt tension, and replacing seals under supervision.
- Mentor new assistants and apprentices by sharing field tips, safe lifting techniques, and basic equipment knowledge as experience grows.
