Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and verify architectural plans, kitchen layouts, and shop drawings, ensuring all cabinet and countertop dimensions, materials, edge profiles and hardware locations match production requirements before cutting or assembly.
  • Set up and operate CNC routers, nested-based machining centers and panel saws to cut cabinet cases, doors, end panels and components to precise tolerances while following tooling, feed and speed specifications.
  • Program, adjust and troubleshoot CNC machine files and fixtures in collaboration with CAD/CAM personnel to optimize material nesting, reduce waste and maintain part accuracy.
  • Measure, mark and cut solid surface and stone substrates (where applicable) for countertops, backsplashes and sills, preparing pieces for seams, templating and final finishing.
  • Perform precise edge banding, veneering, lamination and scribe work using handheld and automatic edgebanders, ensuring seams, joints and band profiles are smooth and visually seamless.
  • Assemble cabinetry and millwork using dowels, biscuits, screws, camlock fittings, biscuits and glue; clamp and square cases, check for dimensional accuracy and reinforce joints per specification.
  • Fit and install hinges, slides, soft-close mechanisms and decorative hardware, adjusting for smooth operation and consistent reveal/clearance across door and drawer assemblies.
  • Sand, finish and repair cabinet doors, drawer fronts and visible surfaces using spray booths, hand sanding and buffing tools, applying stains, lacquers or clear coats to meet finish standards.
  • Create and verify complex templates for on-site countertop installations, coordinating with field templators and installers to capture sinks, cooktops and backsplash profiles accurately.
  • Perform final quality inspections on finished components including tolerance checks, color and grain matching, edge integrity and hardware operation prior to shipping or installation.
  • Fabricate custom or one-off millwork items such as island end panels, appliance panels, decorative trim and specialty storage solutions according to custom requests and designer directives.
  • Maintain updated logs of production runs, material usage, cutting schedules and job-specific notes to support production planning and reduce lead times.
  • Coordinate with warehouse and logistics teams to package, label and stage finished cabinetry and countertop assemblies for safe transport and efficient installation scheduling.
  • Repair and rework defective or damaged components, diagnosing root causes (material defects, machine set-up, human error) and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Train and mentor junior fabricators and apprentices on safe machine operation, best practices for joinery and finishing, and company-specific fabrication standards.
  • Implement and follow workplace safety programs including lockout/tagout, dust collection maintenance, PPE enforcement and safe lifting practices to minimize shop accidents and comply with OSHA guidelines.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks and other material handling equipment to move sheet goods, finished assemblies and work-in-progress through production safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain and perform basic preventative maintenance on saws, routers, sanders, edgebanders and dust collection systems, escalating complex repairs to maintenance staff as needed.
  • Collaborate directly with designers and project managers to propose manufacturable alternatives for complex details that reduce cost, improve durability or accelerate production.
  • Estimate fabrication time, material yields and waste for assigned jobs, providing feedback to production planning to support accurate scheduling and pricing.
  • Maintain clean, organized workstations and enforce 5S principles to improve throughput, reduce rework and create a consistent production environment.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggest process improvements, tooling changes and layout optimizations to increase throughput and reduce scrap.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory counts, receiving and stocking of sheet goods, laminates, edging, hardware and finishing supplies to maintain production continuity.
  • Support ad-hoc installation teams by providing detailed cabinet assembly notes, on-site modifications or remedial fabrication when field conditions differ from shop drawings.
  • Contribute to product documentation by photographing finished assemblies, noting job-specific tweaks and updating fabrication standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Work with procurement to identify suppliers for specialty materials such as solid-surface, engineered stone, exotic veneers and custom hardware.
  • Participate in job debriefs and post-install reviews to capture feedback for improved fit, finish and manufacturability on subsequent projects.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting shop drawings, architectural plans, and cabinet elevations.
  • CNC router operation and basic programming/nesting (e.g., nested-based manufacturing, router CAM tools).
  • Proficient operation of panel saws, table saws, jointers, planers, edge banders, dowel machines and wide-belt sanders.
  • Solid experience with edge banding, laminating, veneering and solid surface fabrication techniques.
  • Competence in cabinet assembly methods: dowels, biscuits, confirmat screws, pocket screws, cam fittings and mechanical fasteners.

  • Familiarity with countertop materials (laminate, solid surface, quartz, granite) and safe handling/processing requirements.
  • Quality control inspection techniques and tolerance verification to ensure finished products meet client and company standards.
  • Forklift and material handling certification or demonstrated safe experience operating shop lifting equipment.
  • Preventative maintenance basics for woodworking machinery and dust collection systems.
