Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist the lead installer by accurately measuring kitchen rooms and creating detailed cut lists and material take-offs to ensure minimal waste and correct product ordering for tile, vinyl plank, laminate, or hardwood installations.
  • Prepare and inspect subfloors by removing old materials, sweeping, vacuuming, leveling, and repairing minor imperfections to achieve manufacturer-specified tolerances for flatness and moisture before installing new flooring.
  • Install underlayments, moisture barriers, vapor retarders, and sound-reducing pads per product guidelines, ensuring proper seams, overlaps, and secure fastening to prevent future movement or squeaks.
  • Cut flooring materials (tile, LVP/LVT planks, hardwood, and laminate) with hand tools and power saws (miter saw, wet saw, jigsaw, table saw), making precise cuts for cabinets, islands, doorways, and fixtures while maintaining clean, accurate edges.
  • Mix, spread, and apply adhesives, thinset mortar, leveling compounds, and grout using trowels, serrated trowels, grout floats, and pumps, following manufacturer specifications for coverage, open time, and cure conditions.
  • Lay and align tile, plank, and hardwood products in straight, staggered, or patterned layouts as directed, using spacers, chalk lines, and laser levels to maintain consistent joint widths and visually balanced seams.
  • Install transition strips, thresholds, reducer pieces, stair nosing, and baseboard/quarter-round trim to create complete, code-compliant finished edges between kitchen flooring and adjacent surfaces.
  • Measure and test for moisture and pH using moisture meters, calcium chloride tests or relative humidity probes where required; report results and follow remediation steps or lead installer instructions if values exceed acceptable limits.
  • Remove and dispose of demolition debris, old flooring, adhesives, and packaging materials in compliance with jobsite rules and local disposal regulations, keeping work areas clean and safe throughout the installation process.
  • Carry and stage materials and tools on-site, organize inventory for each job, and coordinate restocking or returns with warehouse or office staff to prevent delays and control job costs.
  • Assist with layout and marking for cabinetry, appliances, islands, cooktops, and sinks to ensure flooring is cut and fitted around fixed kitchen fixtures with appropriate clearances and expansion gaps.
  • Perform light carpentry such as scribing, trimming, and fitting transition moldings and thresholds, and secure them with appropriate fasteners or adhesives to achieve a professional finish.
  • Apply sealers, finishes, or protective coatings to installed flooring (where specified) and perform initial cleanup, buffing, or polishing to meet client expectations and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Document job progress, record materials used, and report any discrepancies, damage, or unforeseen issues to the lead installer or project supervisor for timely resolution and accurate job costing.
  • Communicate professionally with homeowners and site supervisors to explain minor scheduling changes, protect finished surfaces, and coordinate access while preserving the customer experience.
  • Operate and maintain portable power equipment (wet saws, compressors, nailers, sanders) safely, performing routine maintenance and cleaning to extend tool life and ensure reliable jobsite performance.
  • Follow company and OSHA safety protocols, including proper lifting techniques, personal protective equipment (PPE), ladder and scaffold safety, and hazard communication for adhesives, solvents, and dust-generating activities.
  • Assist with on-site quality control checks: verify straight lines, level transitions, consistent grout lines, and the absence of gaps, loose planks, or lippage prior to final sign-off.
  • Support warranty and punch-list activities after initial installation, returning for small repairs, replacing damaged pieces per warranty guidelines, and documenting corrective actions.
  • Learn and apply manufacturer-specific installation methods and warranty requirements for diverse flooring products (porcelain/ceramic tile, engineered and solid hardwood, LVP/LVT, laminate) to maintain compliance and protect warranties.
  • Help estimate simple material quantities and labor time for small change orders or additional work under the direction of a lead installer or estimator, using basic math and measuring skills.
  • Maintain cleanliness and professional presentation of company vehicle, toolkits, and branded materials; ensure tools are inventoried, secured, and reported if lost or damaged.
  • Support training efforts by shadowing experienced installers, attending on-the-job coaching, and practicing layout, cutting, and installation techniques to build speed and technical competence.
  • Assist in coordinating subcontractors (countertop installers, plumbers, electricians) to sequence work properly so flooring is installed without obstructing or being damaged by follow-on trades.

Secondary Functions

  • Help prepare simple materials orders and returns, logging product codes, serial numbers, and batch info to support inventory accuracy and minimize project delays.
  • Participate in pre-installation site walks with the lead installer and client to confirm scope, flooring orientation, transitions, and special cutting requirements — documenting agreed changes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on common field issues (product fit, subfloor problems, tool needs) to operations or purchasing teams.
  • Assist with marketing or warranty photo documentation by taking clear, well-lit before/after images of installations for company records and portfolio use.
  • Support emergency callbacks and warranty requests within reasonable response windows, coordinating with dispatch to minimize customer inconvenience.
  • Attend brief safety/toolbox talks and product training sessions to stay current on new flooring systems, adhesives, and installation standards.
  • Maintain compliance with company timekeeping and reporting systems by submitting accurate daily hours, travel time, and materials usage.
