Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive inspections, testing, and maintenance of wet chemical kitchen fire suppression systems in strict accordance with NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, manufacturer guidelines, and local fire codes.
  • Conduct thorough cleaning and degreasing of entire kitchen exhaust systems, including hoods, ductwork, filters, and rooftop exhaust fans, to eliminate flammable grease buildup.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot system malfunctions, identifying issues with detection lines, control heads, nozzles, and mechanical or electrical components, and perform necessary repairs.
  • Execute semi-annual and annual service appointments, which include replacing critical components like fusible links and suppression agent cartridges as per their expiration dates.
  • Prepare and provide detailed, accurate electronic inspection and service reports to clients, clearly documenting all findings, services performed, and any deficiencies discovered.
  • Communicate professionally with restaurant owners, kitchen managers, and facility directors to explain inspection results, system deficiencies, and the importance of recommended repairs for their safety and compliance.
  • Safely operate high-pressure, hot water power washing equipment and specialized cleaning tools to effectively remove grease from all accessible areas of the exhaust system.
  • Perform rooftop work to access, inspect, and service exhaust fans, which may involve installing hinge kits, cleaning fan blades, and checking belt tension and motor function.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of parts, tools, and equipment on a company-provided service vehicle, ensuring you are prepared for scheduled jobs and emergency calls.
  • Complete and submit all required job-related paperwork and digital documentation in a timely and accurate manner, including work orders, time sheets, and vehicle logs.
  • Install new kitchen fire suppression and exhaust hood systems, following blueprints, engineering specifications, and manufacturer's installation manuals.
  • Respond to emergency service calls, sometimes after hours, to address system discharges or critical malfunctions to get the client's kitchen back in operation safely.
  • Meticulously protect customer equipment and kitchen surfaces using plastic sheeting and other materials before beginning any cleaning or service work.
  • Generate and present quotes to customers for necessary repairs, system upgrades, or deficiency corrections, explaining the value and safety benefits of the proposed work.
  • Stay current with all relevant fire codes, standards (NFPA), and manufacturer-specific training to ensure services are always up to the latest requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to apprentice technicians, guiding them on proper procedures, safety protocols, and customer interaction.
  • Identify opportunities to recommend additional safety services or products, such as fire extinguishers or exit lighting service, that would benefit the customer.
  • Collaborate with fire marshals and insurance inspectors during on-site evaluations, providing system information and demonstrating proper functionality.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, acting as a key representative of the company and its commitment to quality and safety.
  • Adhere to all company and customer safety policies, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), fall protection, and chemical handling procedures.
  • Assist in the shop with equipment maintenance, parts restocking, and preparation for upcoming jobs as needed.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep understanding of NFPA standards, particularly NFPA 96 (Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations) and 17A (Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems).
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with proven ability to troubleshoot and repair system components.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment such as multimeters.
  • Experience operating and maintaining high-pressure washing systems and related equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and system schematics.
  • Knowledge of various fire suppression system manufacturers (e.g., Ansul, Pyro-Chem, Kidde, Range Guard).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record, as a service vehicle is essential to the role.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a technical, hands-on role within skilled trades, maintenance, or a related field.

Preferred: Direct experience in the commercial kitchen exhaust cleaning or fire suppression industry. State-recognized Fire Marshal license or certifications from system manufacturers (like Ansul R-102) are highly advantageous. Experience working night shifts is also a plus, as much of this work is performed after business hours.
