Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Actively assist lead carpenters and installers with the careful and precise demolition of existing kitchen components, including cabinets, countertops, flooring, and fixtures.
- Meticulously prepare job sites for renovation by setting up comprehensive dust barriers, laying down floor protection, and organizing tools and materials for optimal workflow.
- Handle the loading, unloading, and careful transportation of project materials, which includes heavy items like cabinets, stone countertops, appliances, and tile.
- Provide direct support during the installation of kitchen cabinetry, assisting with lifting, positioning, leveling, shimming, and securing units to walls and each other.
- Aid in the placement and installation of various countertop materials, ensuring proper handling and support under the guidance of a lead installer.
- Perform basic framing and structural adjustments as directed by the site supervisor to accommodate new kitchen layouts, plumbing, or electrical requirements.
- Execute drywall repair tasks, including patching, taping, mudding, and sanding, to prepare walls for priming and painting.
- Assist with the installation of various flooring materials such as tile, hardwood, or luxury vinyl plank (LVP), including underlayment preparation and cutting pieces to fit.
- Support the backsplash installation process, which involves assisting with layout, cutting tiles, mixing and applying thin-set mortar, setting tiles, and grouting.
- Help prepare areas for licensed plumbers and electricians by clearing spaces, drilling access holes, and performing other non-specialized support tasks.
- Precisely install cabinet hardware, including handles, knobs, and pulls, ensuring consistent alignment and proper function across all doors and drawers.
- Perform minor painting and touch-up work on walls, trim, and cabinetry to achieve a polished, finished look.
- Assemble and assist with the installation of kitchen fixtures, such as sinks, faucets, garbage disposals, and light fixtures, under direct supervision.
- Take responsibility for the proper maintenance, cleaning, and organized storage of all company tools and equipment at the end of each workday.
- Safely and proficiently operate a wide variety of hand and power tools, including miter saws, circular saws, drills, sanders, and nail guns.
- Proactively maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site throughout the entire duration of the project to prevent hazards and improve efficiency.
- Run errands to procure materials, supplies, or tools as directed by the project lead to prevent work stoppages and maintain project momentum.
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with the lead installer regarding project progress, task completion, and any potential issues or challenges encountered.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to prevent accidents.
- Assist in the final project walkthrough with the client and lead, diligently completing punch-list items to ensure total client satisfaction and project sign-off.
- Carefully unpack and inspect all materials and fixtures upon delivery, checking for damage, defects, or discrepancies against the project order.
- Measure and accurately cut various materials, such as trim, moulding, and lumber, according to project specifications and drawings.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain an organized inventory of consumable supplies (e.g., screws, fasteners, caulk, shims) and report to the supervisor when stock is running low.
- Perform thorough daily job site cleanup, including sweeping, vacuuming, and proper disposal of construction debris in designated containers.
- Interact professionally, respectfully, and courteously with clients, their families, and their neighbors when present on a job site.
- Assist in orienting and training new helpers or apprentices on basic job site tasks, safety procedures, and company standards.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- High proficiency with a wide range of hand tools (hammers, tape measures, levels, squares) and power tools (drills, impact drivers, circular saws, miter saws, jigsaws).
- Foundational knowledge of residential construction principles and the general sequence of a remodeling project.
- Proven experience with demolition techniques that minimize collateral damage to surrounding areas.
- Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, architectural drawings, and manufacturer installation guides.
- Practical experience in cabinet installation, including scribing, leveling, shimming, and securing cabinets.
- Solid basic carpentry skills, including the ability to make precise cuts, join wood, and install trim and moulding.
- Physical strength and stamina to repeatedly lift and maneuver heavy objects (50-75 lbs) and work in physically demanding positions.
