Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly operate various grinding machines, including surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, and specialized blade sharpening equipment, to sharpen and recondition industrial knives and blades.
  • Precisely set up grinding machines by adjusting wheel speeds, feed rates, table angles, and machine stops to meet demanding product specifications and tolerances.
  • Carefully select and mount appropriate grinding wheels, dressing and truing them as needed to maintain optimal shape and cutting effectiveness for different materials and finishes.
  • Systematically inspect incoming dull or damaged blades to accurately diagnose the extent of wear, chips, or damage and determine the most effective method for sharpening or repair.
  • Perform high-precision grinding, honing, and deburring operations on a variety of materials, including high-carbon steel, stainless steel, and tungsten carbide.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, protractors, and optical comparators to meticulously verify blade dimensions, angles, and surface finish against blueprints and quality standards.
  • Conduct regular, in-process quality control checks throughout the sharpening process to ensure absolute consistency and prevent any deviation from specifications.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with grinding machinery, performing routine preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance, safety, and equipment longevity.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of work performed, including machine settings, blade types, and maintenance logs for full traceability and process improvement analysis.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and respirators.
  • Manage and maintain an inventory of grinding wheels, coolants, and other essential consumables, reporting replenishment needs to the supervisor to prevent stockouts and production delays.
  • Interpret complex technical drawings, blueprints, and work orders to fully understand the specific geometric and material requirements for each grinding job.
  • Collaborate effectively with production and maintenance teams to schedule blade changes and sharpening, strategically minimizing equipment downtime and production interruptions.
  • Meticulously clean and maintain grinding machines and the surrounding work area to ensure a safe, organized, and highly efficient environment.
  • Perform static and dynamic balancing of grinding wheels to prevent machine vibration and ensure a superior, high-quality surface finish on all sharpened blades.
  • Skillfully adjust and set up fixtures, magnetic chucks, jigs, and holding devices to securely position blades for accurate and safe grinding operations.
  • Monitor the entire grinding process, listening for unusual noises and observing machine operation to proactively detect potential malfunctions or safety hazards.
  • Handle and transport sharp, heavy, and often delicate blades with extreme care and proper technique to prevent personal injury or damage to valuable assets.
  • Develop and refine grinding techniques for new or unusual types of blades and materials, contributing to the team's continuous improvement of quality and efficiency.
  • Immediately report any non-conformance, quality issues, or safety concerns to the shift supervisor or quality department for prompt corrective action.
  • Assist in the hands-on training and mentorship of new or less experienced operators on proper grinding techniques, machine operation, and critical safety procedures.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement (Kaizen) initiatives, providing valuable feedback and suggestions to enhance workflow, safety, and product quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc sharpening requests from the Research & Development or maintenance departments for special projects.
  • Contribute to the organization's equipment maintenance strategy and preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to test and provide feedback on new blade materials or grinding wheel compositions.
  • Participate in daily production meetings, safety huddles, and planning sessions within the manufacturing team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating manual and CNC grinding machines (e.g., surface, cylindrical, profile grinders).
  • Expertise in the selection, mounting, dressing, and balancing of various types of grinding wheels.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and technical work orders.
  • Skilled in using a wide range of precision measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and profilometers.
  • In-depth knowledge of different metal properties (e.g., tool steels, HSS, carbide) and their reactions to the grinding process.
  • Hands-on experience with various sharpening, precision honing, and edge deburring techniques.
  • Foundational machine maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with industrial coolants, their proper mixture, application, and filtration system maintenance.
  • Verifiable knowledge of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and other critical industrial safety standards.

  • Experience with both wet and dry grinding processes and understanding their appropriate applications.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
