Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute multi-stage grinding and polishing operations on knife blades and components using a variety of belt grinders, buffing wheels, and lapping machines to achieve precise, specified finishes such as mirror, satin, brushed, or stonewash.
  • Skillfully select, install, and dress the appropriate abrasive belts, buffing wheels, polishing compounds, and lubricants based on the material type, part geometry, and desired surface finish outlined in work orders.
  • Meticulously inspect blades throughout the finishing process, using both visual checks and precision measuring instruments like micrometers and calipers, to ensure dimensional accuracy, edge straightness, and cosmetic perfection.
  • Operate surface grinders and other machinery to precisely flatten and contour blade surfaces, ensuring they meet strict geometric tolerances before the final polishing stages.
  • Perform detailed deburring and edge-breaking on machined parts by hand or with specialized tools to remove sharp edges and burrs, ensuring safe handling and proper fit during assembly.
  • Interpret and work from complex blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions to understand the specific finishing requirements, critical dimensions, and quality standards for each product.
  • Master the art of free-hand grinding and polishing, demonstrating exceptional hand-eye coordination and a steady hand to create consistent, flawless finishes on complex curves and surfaces.
  • Uphold rigorous quality control standards by performing final inspections on finished products, identifying and correcting any imperfections, blemishes, or deviations from the required specifications.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of various steel types (e.g., stainless, carbon, Damascus, tool steels) and other materials to apply the most effective finishing techniques for each.
  • Set up, calibrate, and perform routine adjustments on grinding and polishing equipment to ensure optimal performance, consistency, and safety throughout the production run.
  • Consistently meet or exceed production quotas and deadlines without compromising the meticulous quality and high standards expected for premium products.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and procedures, including the mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace to prevent contamination of materials and reduce the risk of accidents in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Document production activities, including parts completed, time spent, and materials used, by accurately filling out production logs and quality assurance forms.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common finishing issues, such as uneven surfaces, swirl marks, or "orange peel," by adjusting technique, equipment, or materials.
  • Carefully handle and transport high-value, delicate components to prevent scratches, dings, or other damage at all stages of the finishing process.
  • Develop and refine techniques for creating specialized or custom finishes as required by new product designs or limited-edition runs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new or less-experienced polishers, sharing knowledge of best practices, safety, and quality standards.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on polishing and grinding machinery, such as cleaning, lubrication, and belt/wheel replacement, to minimize downtime.
