🎯 Role Definition

As a Knife Quality Control Inspector, you will be the frontline guardian of product integrity for blades and finished knives. You will perform detailed dimensional, metallurgical, hardness, sharpness, and surface finish inspections across incoming materials, in-process production stages, and final assembly. This role requires strong knowledge of blade geometry, heat-treatment effects, measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, optical comparator), non-destructive testing (dye penetrant), statistical process control (SPC), and quality systems such as ISO 9001. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive incoming inspection of raw materials (blade steel, handle materials, fasteners) using approved sampling plans, verifying material certificates, chemical/physical properties, and dimensional conformance to specifications before production release.
  • Conduct detailed in-process inspections at multiple production stages (blanking, forging, heat treat, grinding, polishing, assembly) to ensure critical dimensions, bevel geometry, and surface finish meet drawing tolerances and quality standards.
  • Measure and verify blade geometry and critical tolerances (edge angles, spine thickness, tang fit, hole locations) using micrometers, digital calipers, depth gauges, optical comparators, and profile projectors; record measurements in inspection reports and SPC systems.
  • Execute hardness testing (Rockwell, Vickers where applicable) and document heat-treat results against specified hardness ranges and heat-treat lot records to ensure consistent metallurgical performance and expected edge retention.
  • Perform sharpness and cutting performance tests (cutting paper, rope, or standardized sharpness testers) and document pass/fail criteria; escalate atypical results to production and engineering for root cause analysis.
  • Conduct non-destructive testing (liquid penetrant inspection, magnaflux where applicable) to detect surface cracks, inclusions, or subsurface defects on blades and critical components; mark and segregate failing parts per containment procedures.
  • Analyze surface finish quality (polish, satin, stonewash, coating adhesion) against finish standards and visual acceptance criteria, identifying unacceptable scratches, pits, tooling marks, or coating defects; coordinate remedial finishing or rework.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T symbols to ensure parts conform to dimensional and tolerance requirements; provide clarification requests to engineering when specifications are ambiguous.
  • Maintain and update inspection work instructions, quality checklists, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for knife inspection processes to reflect process improvements and engineering changes.
  • Execute first article inspections (FAI) and production part approval process (PPAP)-style evaluations for new knife models and tooling changes, capturing dimensional data, material certifications, and process capability evidence.
  • Use statistical process control (SPC) techniques to monitor process variation, calculate control limits, create control charts, and recommend corrective actions when trends indicate potential nonconformance.
  • Document, track, and escalate nonconforming material using NCRs / deviation reports; lead or participate in containment, corrective action (CAPA), and root cause analysis (5-Why, Fishbone) activities in coordination with production and engineering teams.
  • Calibrate and verify inspection equipment accuracy (micrometers, calipers, gauges, hardness testers) and maintain calibration records; coordinate external calibration services as required to maintain traceability.
  • Inspect knife assemblies for proper fit, torque of fasteners, handle symmetry, and secure retention points; perform function checks on moving components (e.g., folding mechanisms, retention systems) to verify safe operation.
  • Validate coating, plating, and heat-treat process consistency by sampling finished lots, coordinating with process owners to adjust parameters when quality metrics fall outside acceptable ranges.
  • Prepare and deliver detailed inspection reports, batch release documentation, and test certificates for internal stakeholders, customers, or regulatory audits; ensure traceability of inspection data to lot and serial numbers.
  • Collaborate directly with suppliers to resolve incoming material issues, lead supplier corrective actions, and participate in supplier audits as required to raise material quality standards.
  • Train production personnel and new inspectors on inspection techniques, acceptance criteria, safety protocols, and proper use of measuring instruments to reduce defects and ensure consistent inspection practices.
  • Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen) to reduce scrap, rework, and inspection cycle time while improving first-pass yield for knife production.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant inspection environment by following PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and company safety policies while performing hands-on inspections and tests.
  • Support product development by providing inspection input during prototype evaluations, suggesting design-for-manufacture (DFM) improvements that reduce inspection complexity and improve manufacturability.
  • Manage quality KPIs for knife production such as defect per million opportunities (DPMO), scrap rate, incoming rejection rate, and on-time batch releases; present trend data to leadership and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and customer requirements (ISO 9001, CPSIA for certain consumer products, export controls where applicable), preparing for and supporting third-party quality audits.
  • Maintain orderly inspection records, lot histories, and retention samples for warranty claims, returns analysis, and long-term traceability.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-departmental quality investigations and provide measurement support for ad-hoc production or customer complaints.
  • Assist in developing and refining test fixtures, jigs, and custom gauges used to speed up and standardize inspection of knife parts and assemblies.
  • Contribute to product quality documentation including FMEAs, control plans, and inspection flowcharts to improve process predictability and reduce failure modes.
  • Help evaluate new metrology tools and software (digital data capture, CMM proposals) to modernize inspection workflows and improve data accuracy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with vocational/technical training in inspection, machining, or metalworking.

Preferred Education:
