Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diligently learn and apply various sharpening techniques using whetstones, belt grinders, and honing wheels under direct supervision.
  • Meticulously inspect incoming knives and tools to assess their condition, identifying nicks, chips, broken tips, and blade geometry issues.
  • Perform precision sharpening on a wide array of knives, including Japanese and German styles, serrated blades, and single-bevel edges.
  • Execute basic blade repairs, such as tip reshaping, bolster reduction, and chip removal, following established best practices.
  • Master the art of deburring and honing to create a razor-sharp, durable, and refined cutting edge on every blade.
  • Conduct rigorous quality control checks on all sharpened items to ensure they meet our exacting standards for sharpness and finish.
  • Learn to differentiate between various types of steel (e.g., stainless, carbon, powdered) and adjust sharpening methods accordingly.
  • Gain proficiency in sharpening other bladed instruments, such as scissors, garden shears, chisels, and food processor blades.
  • Adhere strictly to all workshop safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and machine guards.
  • Maintain a consistent sharpening angle appropriate for each specific knife's intended use and construction.
  • Disassemble, clean, sharpen, and reassemble folding knives and other complex tools as required.
  • Practice and perfect finishing techniques, including stropping and polishing, to enhance blade performance and aesthetics.
  • Assist senior sharpeners with complex or high-volume sharpening projects, contributing to team efficiency and output.

Secondary Functions

  • Engage with customers in a friendly and professional manner, explaining the sharpening process and services offered.
  • Provide accurate time and cost estimates for sharpening and repair services to clients.
  • Manage the intake and return of customer orders, ensuring accurate tracking and labeling through our point-of-sale or work order system.
  • Educate customers on proper knife care, storage, and at-home maintenance to prolong the life of their edges.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the sharpening station and broader workshop area.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration on all sharpening equipment, including changing belts, dressing stones, and lubricating machinery.
  • Assist with managing inventory of sharpening supplies, retail products, and workshop materials, alerting management to low stock levels.

Experience Requirements
