Primary Functions

  • Deliver exceptional, one-on-one customer consultations, actively listening to their needs to recommend the ideal cutlery based on cooking style, experience, and intended use.
  • Execute professional-grade knife sharpening services using a variety of methods, including Japanese whetstones, belt grinders, and honing rods, to restore blades to peak performance.
  • Educate clientele on the nuances of proper knife handling, storage, and at-home maintenance techniques to preserve the longevity and performance of their culinary tools.
  • Conduct compelling and informative in-store demonstrations of cutting techniques, knife features, and the benefits of different blade styles and materials.
  • Meticulously manage the service workflow for customer knives, including intake assessment, accurate job ticketing, service execution, and quality control before customer pickup.
  • Cultivate and maintain an encyclopedic knowledge of the store's cutlery inventory, including brand histories, steel compositions (e.g., VG-10, AUS-8, SG2, carbon steel), and handle ergonomics.
  • Perform basic knife repairs and maintenance tasks such as tip re-profiling, chip removal, and handle scale tightening under the supervision of a senior specialist.
  • Process sales, returns, and service transactions with precision and efficiency through the Point of Sale (POS) system, ensuring a seamless checkout experience.
  • Actively build and nurture long-term customer relationships, creating a loyal client base through trust, expertise, and outstanding follow-up service.
  • Carefully assess incoming knives for service, identifying potential issues like deep chips, broken tips, or loose handles, and clearly communicating service options and pricing to the customer.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the receiving, unpacking, and verification of new inventory shipments, ensuring products are accurately logged into the inventory system.
  • Contribute to the visual appeal of the department by executing merchandising strategies, building attractive displays, and ensuring all products are clean, well-organized, and correctly priced.
  • Maintain the absolute cleanliness, safety, and organization of the sharpening station and all associated equipment, adhering to strict safety protocols.
  • Support inventory control efforts by participating in periodic cycle counts and full physical inventory checks, reporting any discrepancies promptly.
  • Respond to customer inquiries received via telephone and email with the same level of professionalism and detailed knowledge as in-person interactions.
  • Provide support for special events, private appointments, and off-site sharpening services, assisting with setup, customer engagement, and breakdown.
  • Thoughtfully package customer purchases, paying special attention to high-value and fragile items to guarantee their safe transport from the store.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in the culinary and cutlery industries, including new sharpening technologies, knife makers, and steel innovations.
  • Collaborate with team members across the store to provide a cohesive and high-quality customer experience, offering assistance outside the cutlery department when needed.
  • Uphold all company safety and loss prevention policies, maintaining a vigilant and secure environment for both customers and staff.
  • Proactively solicit and relay customer feedback and suggestions to the management team to help refine product assortment and service offerings.
