Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and program highly complex knit structures and intricate patterns for advanced industrial knitting machinery, such as Stoll M1+ and Shima Seiki APEX systems, to translate creative designs into tangible prototypes.
  • Collaborate intimately with design and product management teams from initial concept ideation through to final product approval, providing expert technical guidance on knit feasibility, construction, and yarn selection.
  • Engineer innovative knit solutions, structures, and materials for performance, athletic, and lifestyle apparel, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in textile technology.
  • Create, manage, and meticulously maintain all technical documentation, including comprehensive knit tech packs, bills of materials (BOMs), and detailed garment specifications for factory partners.
  • Oversee the entire end-to-end knit sample development lifecycle, managing timelines, coordinating with internal and external vendors, and ensuring all prototypes meet rigorous quality, fit, and aesthetic standards.
  • Lead and participate in fit sessions, providing expert technical feedback and solutions on garment construction, fit issues, finishing techniques, and overall make quality to achieve the desired silhouette and function.
  • Drive the sourcing, development, and validation of new yarns, working directly with mills and suppliers to meet specific performance, aesthetic, and sustainability targets.
  • Manage the approval process for all development stages, including knit-downs, color lab dips, strike-offs, and pre-production samples, ensuring consistency and adherence to brand standards.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for overseas vendors and factory partners, effectively troubleshooting production challenges and providing clear, actionable solutions to ensure smooth manufacturing.
  • Conduct ongoing research and analysis of emerging knitting technologies, machinery advancements, software updates, and sustainable material innovations to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Partner closely with the Quality Assurance team to establish, document, and enforce robust quality standards and testing protocols for all knit products.
  • Calculate preliminary yarn consumption and work with the costing team to provide initial cost estimates for new developments, balancing design intent with margin targets.
  • Maintain and organize a comprehensive digital and physical library of knit swatches, yarn qualities, and historical development trials for future reference and inspiration.
  • Develop and manage the knit-specific product development calendar, ensuring all key milestones are met from concept to commercialization.
  • Analyze and interpret testing results for fabrics and garments, including assessments for shrinkage, torqueing, pilling, and colorfastness, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Create detailed specifications for whole-garment knitting, ensuring programs are optimized for efficiency, quality, and minimal waste.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior team members, designers, and product developers on the technical aspects of knitwear engineering and development.
  • Evaluate competitor products through reverse engineering and analysis to identify new techniques, construction methods, and market trends.
  • Champion sustainability initiatives within the knit development process, from sourcing recycled or certified yarns to optimizing programs for reduced material waste.
  • Travel domestically and internationally to work directly with factory partners, oversee sample production, and resolve any on-the-ground technical issues.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Knitting Machine Programming: Expert-level proficiency in Stoll M1+ and/or Shima Seiki APEX design and programming software.
  • Knit Structure Expertise: Deep knowledge of a wide range of knit structures, including jacquard, intarsia, jersey, rib, purl, and fully-fashioned techniques.
  • Yarn Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of fiber types, yarn spinning systems, yarn properties, and their application in different knit fabrics.
  • Garment Construction: Strong knowledge of sweater and knit garment construction, trims, and finishing techniques.
  • Technical Specification Packages: Proven ability to create clear, concise, and accurate tech packs for factory execution.

  • Color Evaluation: A trained eye for color and the ability to accurately evaluate and approve lab dips and shade bands.
  • Fitting and Pattern Adjustments: Experience conducting fittings and communicating pattern or programming adjustments to correct fit issues.
  • Textile Testing Standards: Familiarity with AATCC and ASTM testing standards for performance and quality assurance.
  • Costing Principles: Understanding of how yarn selection, machine time, and construction affect product cost.
