Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and create a diverse range of knit swatches by hand and/or machine to explore new stitches, textures, and colorways for the upcoming season.
  • Operate and maintain industrial knitting machines (such as Stoll or Shima Seiki) under supervision, including setting up machines, programming basic patterns, and troubleshooting minor issues.
  • Assist in the creation of technical packages (tech packs) for knitwear, including detailed stitch diagrams, yarn specifications, and construction notes.
  • Translate design concepts and sketches into tangible knit samples, working closely with designers to achieve the desired look and feel.
  • Meticulously organize and maintain the studio's yarn library, including cataloging new arrivals, winding cones, and ensuring color and quality accuracy.
  • Conduct research on emerging knitwear trends, innovative yarn materials, and new stitch techniques to present findings to the design team.
  • Prepare and assemble concept boards, mood boards, and presentation materials for design meetings and seasonal kick-offs.
  • Document the development process for each swatch and sample, including yarn usage, machine settings, and finishing techniques for future reference.
  • Assist senior designers during knitwear fittings, taking detailed notes on fit, drape, and necessary adjustments.
  • Collaborate on the hand-knitting or crocheting of specialized, show-stopping pieces or intricate details for collection samples.
  • Utilize Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create knitwear simulations, color-ups, and pattern repeats for digital review.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the team in sourcing new yarn and trim suppliers, requesting samples, and managing communications.
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the knitwear studio, ensuring tools and materials are properly stored and accessible.
  • Prepare and package outgoing knit samples and development packages for factories or vendors, ensuring all components are included and correctly labeled.
  • Help in tracking the progress of knit samples throughout the development lifecycle, from initial swatch to final prototype.
  • Participate actively in team brainstorming sessions, contributing creative ideas for new knitwear concepts and designs.
  • Provide general administrative support to the knitwear design department as needed, including copying, scanning, and archiving.
  • Assist in quality control checks of incoming knit samples, identifying any discrepancies in color, quality, or construction.
  • Create and manage a digital archive of all knit swatches and developments for easy access and reference in future seasons.
  • Manage the labeling, tagging, and archiving of all physical knit samples, prototypes, and development trials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Hand Knitting Proficiency: Strong ability to knit by hand, with an understanding of various stitches, casting on/off methods, and shaping techniques.
  • Machine Knitting: Foundational knowledge of or a strong aptitude for learning industrial (Stoll, Shima Seiki) or domestic knitting machines.
  • Yarn Knowledge: Familiarity with different fiber types (wool, cotton, cashmere, synthetics), yarn weights, and their properties.
  • Pattern Comprehension: Ability to read and interpret knitting charts, written patterns, and technical diagrams.
  • Adobe Creative Suite: Basic to intermediate proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for creating mockups and editing images.
  • Sewing and Finishing: Competency in basic sewing and knitwear finishing techniques, such as linking, seaming, and weaving in ends.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for tracking, documentation, and presentations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Pursuing or holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-1 years. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals with limited or no professional industry experience.

  • Previous experience in a creative studio environment, even in a non-knitting capacity.
  • Familiarity with the fashion calendar and the product development lifecycle.
