Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up and prepare industrial knitting machines for production runs, including calibrating settings, installing needles, and positioning sinkers according to detailed technical specifications.
  • Expertly thread yarn through all machine guides, tensioners, and needles, ensuring the correct color sequence and yarn type for each specific pattern and design.
  • Continuously monitor machine operation to proactively detect defects in the knitting process, such as dropped stitches, holes, yarn breaks, or pattern inconsistencies, and take immediate corrective action.
  • Operate various types of knitting machinery, which may include circular, flatbed (V-bed), warp, or hosiery knitting machines (e.g., Shima Seiki, Stoll, Lonati, Mayer & Cie).
  • Read and interpret complex production orders, technical specification sheets, and design CADs to ensure the final product matches all requirements for size, style, and material.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on machines, such as cleaning, oiling, and replacing worn-out needles, sinkers, and other components to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct first-piece and in-process quality inspections, measuring fabric dimensions, checking for flaws, and verifying color and texture against approved samples.
  • Carefully doff (remove) completed rolls of fabric or garment panels from the machine without causing damage, and prepare them for the next stage of production.
  • Accurately document production data, including machine output, downtime, material usage, and quality control results, using logbooks or digital systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common machine stoppages and alarms, such as yarn breaks, needle failures, or tension issues, to maintain a smooth production flow.
  • Adjust machine parameters, such as stitch length, tension, and speed, during production to maintain consistent quality and meet efficiency targets.
  • Load and manage digital knitting programs and patterns into the machine's computer interface, ensuring the correct design file is selected for each job.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area around the machinery, adhering to all company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines.
  • Collaborate with knitting technicians and mechanics to diagnose and report more complex mechanical or electrical machine malfunctions.
  • Manage yarn inventory at the machine, ensuring a sufficient supply is staged and ready for use to prevent interruptions in production.
  • Inspect raw materials (yarn cones) for defects, proper labeling, and color matching before loading them onto the machine's creel.
  • Develop a deep understanding of how different yarn types (natural, synthetic, blended) and counts behave during the knitting process.
  • Change out machine setups for different styles or gauges, which may involve swapping needle beds, cylinders, or other major components.
  • Monitor for and report any unusual machine noises or vibrations that could indicate a potential mechanical failure.
  • Ensure the efficient use of materials by minimizing yarn waste and properly segregating scrap for recycling.
  • Participate in training on new machinery, techniques, or safety procedures to continuously build skills and knowledge.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting specific flatbed or circular knitting machines (e.g., Stoll, Shima Seiki, Lonati, Mayer & Cie).
  • Strong understanding of different yarn types, counts, and properties (e.g., wool, cotton, synthetics) and their impact on the final fabric.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical packets, spec sheets, and pattern diagrams.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for performing routine maintenance, needle changes, and minor machine adjustments.
