Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret design sketches, mood boards, and initial concepts to develop the first technical patterns for new knitwear styles.
  • Create and engineer detailed, production-ready knitwear patterns using both manual and digital methods (e.g., CAD software like Shima Seiki or Stoll).
  • Generate and manage comprehensive tech packs, including detailed garment specifications, construction details, stitch diagrams, and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Execute pattern grading across a full range of sizes, ensuring consistent fit and style integrity while accounting for the unique stretch and behavior of knit fabrics.
  • Lead and participate in fit sessions with designers and product developers, providing expert technical feedback and pattern-based solutions to fit issues.
  • Analyze and resolve complex fit and construction problems by making precise pattern adjustments and clearly communicating changes to vendors.
  • Collaborate closely with designers to ensure the technical execution of the garment aligns perfectly with their creative intent and vision.
  • Communicate daily with overseas and domestic factories, providing clear and concise pattern-related comments, corrections, and approvals on all samples (from proto to production).
  • Develop patterns for a wide variety of knit structures, including fully-fashioned, cut-and-sew, intarsia, jacquard, and complex stitch variations.
  • Calculate yarn consumption and yield estimates for costing purposes, working with the production team to ensure financial targets are met.
  • Review and approve TOP (Top of Production) samples against technical specifications to ensure quality and consistency before bulk production commences.
  • Create and maintain a digital and physical library of core blocks and previously developed patterns for efficiency and future reference.
  • Provide technical guidance on garment construction techniques that are most suitable for specific yarns, gauges, and design aesthetics.
  • Ensure all technical patterns and specifications adhere to the brand's established quality standards, fit profiles, and construction guidelines.
  • Manage development timelines for all pattern and sample-related tasks, ensuring deadlines are met in a fast-paced seasonal calendar.

Secondary Functions

  • Research and stay current with innovative knitting techniques, new technologies, and machinery advancements to propose new development opportunities.
  • Assist the yarn sourcing and development team by testing new yarns and providing feedback on their suitability for specific constructions and end-uses.
  • Mentor and train junior members of the technical design or pattern making team, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Maintain the organization and archiving of all physical and digital patterns and tech packs for seasonal handovers and future reference.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Control team to establish quality benchmarks and troubleshoot any bulk production issues that may arise.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Pattern Making: Expertise in flat pattern drafting, draping, and digital pattern creation specifically for knitwear.
  • Knitwear Construction: Deep understanding of various knit constructions, including fully-fashioned, cut-and-sew, linking, intarsia, and jacquard.
  • Pattern Grading: Proven ability to accurately grade knit garments across a full-size range, accounting for fabric stretch and growth.
  • CAD Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with industry-standard knitwear programming software such as Shima Seiki SDS-ONE APEX or Stoll M1 Plus is highly desirable.
  • Adobe Creative Suite: Strong proficiency in Adobe Illustrator for creating detailed technical sketches and spec sheets.
  • Tech Pack Development: Mastery in creating clear, concise, and comprehensive technical packages that factories can easily interpret.
  • Yarn & Gauge Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of different fiber types, yarn properties, and the relationship between yarn, tension, and machine gauge.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
