Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop and deliver engaging, high-quality knitting classes and workshops for a diverse range of skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced artisans.
- Instruct students on fundamental techniques, including casting on, the knit and purl stitch, increasing, decreasing, and binding off, ensuring a solid foundation.
- Teach a variety of advanced and specialty knitting skills such as lace, cabling, brioche, mosaic knitting, and stranded colorwork (Fair Isle).
- Create a positive, inclusive, and encouraging classroom atmosphere where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and celebrate their progress.
- Provide clear, step-by-step demonstrations and offer patient, hands-on assistance to individual students to address their specific challenges and learning styles.
- Guide students through the entire process of completing a project, from pattern comprehension and yarn selection to finishing techniques and garment care.
- Expertly troubleshoot student projects, diagnosing and helping to fix common errors like dropped stitches, incorrect tension, or misread patterns.
- Design and prepare comprehensive class curriculum and supporting materials, including lesson plans, instructional handouts, and digital presentations.
- Stay abreast of current industry trends, new techniques, popular designers, and yarn innovations to keep class offerings fresh, relevant, and exciting.
- Offer private, one-on-one lessons tailored to individual student goals, whether it's tackling a challenging pattern or mastering a specific new skill.
- Lead and facilitate social knitting groups, stitch-ins, and Knit-Alongs (KALs) to build a strong sense of community among customers.
Secondary Functions
- Knit high-quality, attractive store samples to showcase new yarns, highlight pattern features, and inspire customer projects.
- Assist in planning the seasonal and quarterly class calendar in collaboration with store management to ensure a balanced and appealing schedule.
- Actively promote classes, workshops, and store events through enthusiastic in-person interactions, social media engagement, and email newsletters.
- Provide exceptional customer service on the sales floor, assisting customers with project advice, yarn and needle selection, and calculating yarn requirements.
- Manage class administration, including student registration, tracking attendance, and communicating important class information via email or booking software.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the classroom or teaching area before, during, and after each session.
- Manage and maintain an inventory of class-specific supplies, tools, and teaching aids.
- Gather and respond to student feedback to continuously refine and improve course content and teaching effectiveness.
- Contribute to the store's visual merchandising by helping to create inspiring displays that tell a story with yarn and finished projects.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Mastery of a wide array of advanced knitting techniques, including but not limited to lace, cables, steeking, short rows, brioche, and complex colorwork.
- Exceptional proficiency in reading, interpreting, and explaining both written knitting patterns and complex stitch charts.
- Comprehensive knowledge of yarn properties, including fiber content, weight, ply, and appropriate use and care for different types of yarn.
- Ability to knit proficiently in at least two styles (e.g., English/throwing and Continental/picking) to assist a wider range of students.
- Strong skills in finishing techniques, such as seaming, blocking, and weaving in ends, to create professional-quality garments.
- Competence in basic pattern modification, including resizing, substituting yarn, and making minor design adjustments.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of dedicated, advanced-level knitting experience.
