Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, operate, and meticulously tend to advanced industrial knitting machines (e.g., Shima Seiki, Stoll, Lonati) to produce specified fabrics, garments, or textile components according to production schedules.
- Interpret and translate complex technical design specifications, CAD files, and production orders into machine-readable programs and precise physical machine setups.

- Conduct rigorous first-piece and in-process quality inspections, verifying that fabric or garments meet strict quality standards for stitch integrity, tension, dimensions, and overall appearance.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and expertly resolve a wide range of mechanical, electronic, and programming issues, such as yarn breaks, needle defects, pattern errors, and machine stoppages, to minimize costly downtime.
- Finely adjust machine settings, including tension dials, stitch cams, sinker timing, and carrier speeds, to achieve desired fabric characteristics and ensure unwavering consistency across large production runs.
- Collaborate closely with knitwear designers and product developers to create and refine prototypes, test new and innovative yarn combinations, and develop novel knit structures from concept to production readiness.
- Manage the yarn inventory for assigned machines, ensuring the correct type, color, and count are properly loaded, threaded, and replenished as needed to maintain continuous, uninterrupted production.
- Maintain detailed and accurate production logs and shift reports, meticulously documenting machine settings, output quantities, downtime incidents, and any quality issues encountered.
- Program, test, and modify knitting patterns using specialized software (e.g., Shima Seiki APEX, Stoll M1+), making critical adjustments to sizing, shaping, and stitch patterns as required by technical packets.
- Monitor machine operation with a high level of vigilance to detect any deviations from standard, listening for unusual noises and visually scanning for defects in the emerging knit fabric.
- Skillfully execute complex knitting techniques such as intarsia, jacquard, plating, and fully-fashioned or integral knitting according to demanding design and construction requirements.
- Calibrate knitting machines to guarantee consistent sizing and quality across all products, performing regular tests and making precise micro-adjustments to machine parameters.
- Adhere strictly to all established safety protocols and standard operating procedures within the manufacturing environment, including lock-out/tag-out, proper machine handling, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Partner with the Quality Assurance team to perform root cause analysis on recurring defects and implement effective corrective actions to permanently improve overall product quality.
- Develop and knit trial samples for wash testing and technical evaluation, providing critical feedback to the design and development teams on performance and feasibility.
- Efficiently change over machines between different styles, which involves changing programs, yarn setups, and machine gauges or needle beds as needed.
- Optimize knitting programs and machine speeds to maximize efficiency and output without compromising the integrity or quality of the finished product.
