Core Responsibilities
The daily activities of a Knitting Worker Trainee are centered on learning and executing the essential functions of fabric production in a safe and efficient manner.
Primary Functions
- Learn to operate and monitor multi-feeder circular knitting machines to produce high-quality fabric rolls according to detailed production schedules.
- Develop proficiency in setting up machines for new production runs, which includes carefully threading yarn through all guides, tensioners, and needles per style specifications.
- Actively monitor machine operations to quickly detect and flag issues such as yarn breaks, needle defects, or pattern inconsistencies to prevent waste.
- Execute the timely and careful "doffing" (removal) of completed fabric rolls from machines, ensuring proper handling to prevent any damage or soiling.
- Accurately weigh, ticket, and document finished fabric rolls with critical information including style number, lot number, weight, and operator identification.
- Perform initial, at-the-machine quality checks on knitted fabric to identify common defects like holes, dropped stitches, or yarn streaks, and report findings immediately.
- Learn to read and interpret technical specification sheets and production orders to understand all fabric requirements, from yarn type to finished quality standards.
- Under supervision, make minor adjustments to machine settings, such as stitch length and tension controls, to achieve desired fabric weight and appearance.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized work area around the knitting machines, including sweeping and removing lint buildup.
- Assist senior operators and technicians in the complex process of changing out knitting cylinders, dials, and needle sets for different fabric styles.
- Responsible for transporting yarn cones from storage areas to the appropriate knitting machines and correctly mounting them onto the machine's creel.
- Adhere strictly to all established company safety protocols, including the correct and consistent use of all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Meticulously document production output, machine efficiency, and any downtime on daily production logs or within a digital manufacturing system.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with shift supervisors, maintenance mechanics, and quality personnel regarding production status and equipment issues.
- Actively participate in a structured, hands-on training program to build a comprehensive understanding of knitting principles and machine mechanics.
- Learn to identify different types of yarn (e.g., cotton, polyester, spandex) and understand their unique running characteristics on the machines.
- Perform routine preventative cleaning on knitting machines, utilizing compressed air and specialized brushes to remove lint and prevent contamination.
- Master the skill of repairing yarn breaks and replacing individual defective needles promptly to minimize machine downtime and fabric flaws.
- Assist in the process of tying in new yarn cones to old ones to ensure a continuous, uninterrupted knitting process between shifts or runs.
- Observe and learn advanced troubleshooting techniques from senior operators and mechanics to independently resolve common machine stoppages.
Secondary Functions
- Support periodic inventory counts of yarn, needles, and other essential raw materials and spare parts.
- Contribute to our culture of continuous improvement by actively suggesting ways to enhance workplace safety, product quality, or operational efficiency.
- Assist the maintenance team with scheduled preventative maintenance tasks and larger machine overhauls during planned downtime.
- Participate constructively in team meetings and ongoing training sessions focused on production goals, safety updates, and new operational procedures.
