Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist in the development and translation of designer concepts into detailed knitting specifications and technical packs, including stitch construction, gauge, needle selection, and finishing requirements to ensure manufacturability and fidelity to the design intent.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate sample logs, fit notes, and revision histories for all knit prototypes, coordinating between design, pattern, and production teams to track progress and expedite approvals.
  • Operate and set up flatbed and circular knitting machines under supervision, including needle selection, cam settings, yarn feeders, and tension adjustments to produce accurate development samples.
  • Program and test CAD/CAM knit design files (e.g., Shima Seiki SDS-ONE, Stoll M1plus) or work with programmers to convert artwork into machine-ready knit patterns while ensuring correct color repeat and stitch sequence.
  • Draft and grade knit patterns or assist the pattern maker in grading knitwear to ensure proper fit and proportions across sizes, taking into account knit stretch, recovery and garment ease.
  • Conduct first-sample inspections against technical specifications, noting discrepancies in gauge, stitch density, seaming, and finishing; produce detailed technical feedback and corrective action recommendations.
  • Support yarn sourcing and selection by evaluating yarn composition, ply, count, and dye behavior; collaborate with sourcing to identify alternative yarns that meet performance and cost requirements.
  • Create clear, production-ready spec sheets with measurements, tolerance allowances, and construction details (seam type, row counts, finishing methods) for handing off to factories and vendors.
  • Run and document wash, block, and relax tests on knit samples to determine dimensional stability, shrinkage, and hand feel; report findings and recommend finishing adjustments.
  • Assist quality control teams on-line and in pre-shipment inspections by checking garments for gauge consistency, stitch defects, loose ends, incorrect trims, and overall workmanship.
  • Liaise with overseas and domestic suppliers to clarify technical questions, respond to lab dip and strike-off results, and ensure timely resolution of production issues and sample approvals.
  • Support the sampling calendar by prioritizing sample builds, coordinating machine availability, and ensuring that sampling deadlines for seasonal deliveries are met.
  • Maintain and calibrate knitting tools and equipment including needles, sinkers, feeders, and tensioning devices; perform routine troubleshooting and basic repairs to minimize machine downtime.
  • Translate fit session feedback into actionable technical changes, adjusting pattern pieces, stitch counts, or finishing techniques to resolve fit and functional issues.
  • Monitor and analyze production test knits and pilot runs to identify recurring defects, provide root cause analysis, and implement process improvements with production partners.
  • Assist in cost modeling and BOM preparation for knit garments by quantifying yarn consumption, trims, and estimated machine time to support costing and sourcing decisions.
  • Document and standardize knitting techniques, recipes, and machine settings for repeat styles to reduce sample iterations and ensure consistent quality across production runs.
  • Maintain an organized sample archive and digital library of swatches, stitch patterns, and technical files to support rapid re-development and reference for future collections.
  • Coordinate with dye houses and lab technicians to follow up on color fastness, shade matching, and dye lot tolerances specific to knit constructions.
  • Support compliance and testing by preparing garment samples for flammability, pilling, and colorfastness testing; ensure test results are documented and communicated to stakeholders.
  • Assist in training junior technicians and operators on standard operating procedures, safe machine use, and basic knit construction principles to build internal capability.
  • Keep abreast of new knit technologies, yarn innovations, and sustainable materials and incorporate recommendations into sampling and product development discussions.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide ad-hoc support to the design and production teams during peak sample windows or production escalations.
  • Compile and maintain supplier contact lists, machine capability charts, and lead-time calendars to support planning and vendor selection.
  • Assist in inventory management of yarns, trims, and sample hardware, coordinating reorders and managing swatch library organization.
  • Support sustainability initiatives by logging material content, tracking recycled or certified yarn usage, and flagging opportunities to replace unsustainable inputs.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings (design reviews, pre-production meetings, QA briefings) to represent knit-specific constraints and opportunities.
  • Prepare simple weekly progress reports on sample status, open issues, and escalation items for the Technical Design and Product Development teams.
  • Help coordinate international sample shipping and customs documentation when liaising with overseas suppliers or third-party knitting houses.
  • Contribute to template improvements for tech packs, spec sheets, and measurement forms to increase clarity and reduce errors during production handoff.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Practical experience operating flatbed and circular knitting machines, including setting needle beds, feeders, and tensions for accurate sample production.
  • Proficiency with knit CAD/CAM or stitch programming software such as Shima Seiki SDS-ONE, Stoll M1plus, or equivalent tools for converting designs into machine files.
  • Strong understanding of knit construction fundamentals: gauge calculation, stitch types, needle selection, tension, stitch density and row/needle counts.
  • Pattern drafting and grading for knit garments, with ability to adjust for stretch, recovery, and intended ease across size ranges.

  • Familiarity with garment costing inputs for knits: yarn consumption calculation, machine time, and trim estimation for bill of materials (BOM).
  • Basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting skills: replacing needles, adjusting cams, resolving tension irregularities and common mechanical faults.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel for sample tracking, measurement charts and basic data logging; comfortable with Google Workspace or PLM systems for documentation.
  • Knowledge of sustainable yarn certifications and circular economy principles applicable to knitwear sourcing and development.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
