Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the conceptualization and development of physical knobs, dials, buttons, and other control mechanisms from initial sketch to mass production.
  • Translate abstract user needs and brand values into tangible, ergonomic, and aesthetically pleasing physical forms.
  • Create compelling 2D concept sketches, visual mockups, and detailed renderings to effectively communicate design intent and explore a wide range of creative solutions.
  • Develop highly detailed and production-ready 3D CAD models (e.g., SolidWorks, Rhino, Alias) with a focus on Class-A surfacing, mechanical integration, and tolerance analysis.
  • Conduct in-depth user research, including ethnographic studies, ergonomic assessments, and usability testing, to inform design decisions and validate interaction models.
  • Design and specify the haptic feedback profile for controls, defining characteristics like detent feel, rotational torque, actuation force, and auditory feedback.
  • Build and test a wide array of physical prototypes, from low-fidelity foam models to high-fidelity, fully functional mechatronic assemblies, to evaluate ergonomics and user feel.
  • Collaborate intimately with Mechanical Engineering teams to ensure designs are mechanically sound, reliable, and optimized for performance and longevity.
  • Work directly with Electrical Engineering to seamlessly integrate sensors, lighting, and other electronic components within the physical control assembly.
  • Champion Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles throughout the design process to ensure cost-effective and high-quality production outcomes.
  • Select and specify materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, CNC machining, metal stamping, PVD coating) to achieve the desired aesthetic and functional quality.
  • Create comprehensive design specification documents and visual guidelines that clearly articulate every detail of the knob's design for manufacturing partners.
  • Participate in and lead design review sessions, articulating design choices and strategic thinking to cross-functional teams and executive leadership.
  • Travel to manufacturing facilities to oversee tooling development, approve first articles, and troubleshoot production issues to ensure design intent is maintained at scale.
  • Analyze competitor products and broader market trends to identify opportunities for innovation in physical interaction and interface design.
  • Manage external design resources, consultants, and prototyping vendors to augment internal capabilities and meet project deadlines.
  • Develop unique surface textures, knurling patterns, and decorative elements that enhance grip, provide clear feedback, and reinforce the product's visual identity.
  • Integrate backlighting and other illumination strategies into control designs, considering factors like light-piping, dead-front effects, and color consistency.
  • Define and document the complete user interaction flow for complex controls that may include push, turn, and toggle functions.
  • Build a deep understanding of human factors and anthropometrics to design controls that are accessible and comfortable for a diverse range of users.
  • Drive the creation of a cohesive physical design language across an entire product family, ensuring consistency in feel, interaction, and appearance.

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the organization's physical design language and component library for future use.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert 3D CAD Modeling: Mastery of parametric and/or surface modeling software such as SolidWorks, Rhino, Alias, or Creo.
  • Advanced Rendering: Proficiency in creating photorealistic product visualizations using tools like Keyshot, V-Ray, or Blender Cycles.
  • 2D Design & Sketching: Strong traditional sketching and digital illustration skills using tablets and software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
