Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare, sterilize, and maintain laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and glassware to ensure readiness for experimental procedures.
  • Accurately prepare chemical solutions, reagents, buffers, and culture media according to standardized operating procedures (SOPs) and specific project requirements.
  • Receive, log, and process biological or chemical samples, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and storage to maintain sample integrity.
  • Perform routine laboratory assays and experiments under the direct supervision of senior lab personnel, such as titrations, dilutions, and spectrophotometry.
  • Execute fundamental molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR setup, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Maintain and passage mammalian or microbial cell cultures using strict aseptic techniques to prevent contamination.
  • Meticulously record all experimental procedures, observations, and raw data in physical or electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN) in a clear and timely manner.
  • Perform routine data entry and organization of experimental results into databases or spreadsheets (e.g., LIMS, Excel) for analysis by the research team.
  • Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and consumables, initiating purchase requisitions to prevent stock shortages.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all laboratory safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of hazardous materials.
  • Collect, segregate, and dispose of chemical and biohazardous waste according to institutional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Operate and conduct routine performance checks and calibration on basic laboratory equipment like centrifuges, pH meters, balances, and autoclaves.
  • Assist in the organization and cleanliness of the laboratory, including cleaning workbenches, shared equipment, and storage areas.
  • Support the preparation of materials and data for research presentations, lab meetings, and scientific publications.
  • Troubleshoot minor issues with equipment and experimental protocols, documenting the problem and solution or escalating to senior staff when necessary.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the validation and implementation of new laboratory methods and protocols.
  • Monitor and document environmental conditions for sensitive storage units such as refrigerators, freezers (-20°C, -80°C), and incubators.
  • Support the logistics of receiving and unpacking laboratory supply orders, verifying contents against packing slips.
  • Prepare specimen collection kits for clinical or field studies according to specific study protocols.
  • Perform literature searches to gather background information for new experiments or techniques as directed by researchers.
  • Aid in the maintenance of animal colonies and perform basic animal husbandry duties in compliance with IACUC regulations (if applicable to the lab).
  • Participate in lab meetings by taking notes and presenting simple data summaries when required.
  • Contribute to drafting and revising Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for routine lab tasks.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Aseptic/Sterile Technique: Proficiency in procedures to prevent contamination, especially for cell culture or microbiology work.
  • Pipetting: Accurate use of micropipettes and other liquid handling instruments for precise measurements.
  • Solution Preparation: Ability to perform calculations (molarity, dilutions) and accurately prepare reagents and media from stock materials.
  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS): Experience with or ability to quickly learn LIMS for sample tracking and data entry.
  • Basic Lab Equipment Operation: Competence with centrifuges, balances, autoclaves, pH meters, and microscopes.
  • Data Recording & Management: Meticulous record-keeping in lab notebooks (physical or electronic) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: Knowledge of chemical safety (SDS), biosafety levels (BSL), and proper waste disposal procedures.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of relevant experience.
