Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute a diverse range of standard and specialized laboratory experiments following established protocols, including molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques.
  • Perform and troubleshoot common molecular biology procedures such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and gel electrophoresis for genetic analysis.
  • Maintain and passage mammalian cell cultures using sterile aseptic techniques, including media preparation, cell counting, cryopreservation, and thawing.
  • Conduct protein analysis experiments, including Western blotting, ELISA, immunoprecipitation, and protein quantification assays.
  • Prepare and manage chemical solutions, buffers, reagents, and media with a high degree of precision, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and quality control.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on a variety of standard laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges, spectrophotometers, microscopes, and pH meters.
  • Assist with in-vivo studies, which may include animal handling, husbandry, dosing, and tissue collection in strict accordance with ethical guidelines and IACUC protocols.
  • Accurately record all experimental procedures, raw data, and observations in a detailed and organized laboratory notebook, either physical or electronic (ELN).
  • Perform data collection and preliminary analysis using software such as Excel, GraphPad Prism, or other specialized programs, preparing data for review by senior researchers.
  • Prepare tissue and cell samples for analysis through techniques like histology, including tissue fixing, embedding, sectioning (cryostat/microtome), and staining (IHC/IF).
  • Collect, process, and log biological samples (e.g., blood, tissue, cells) from various sources, ensuring proper handling and storage for future analysis.
  • Conduct literature reviews to understand the context of experiments and assist in the development or modification of research protocols.
  • Assist senior personnel in the design and optimization of new experimental procedures to achieve research objectives.

Secondary Functions

  • Manage and maintain laboratory inventory, including ordering and receiving lab supplies, reagents, and consumables to prevent research delays.
  • Ensure the laboratory remains clean, organized, and safe by following all safety protocols, managing biohazardous waste disposal, and conducting regular lab clean-ups.
  • Prepare clear summaries, figures, and preliminary interpretations of experimental results for presentation at internal lab meetings.
  • Assist in the training of new lab members, interns, or undergraduate students on basic laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain and update databases of experimental results, plasmid constructs, cell lines, and reagent inventories.
  • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications by generating figures, compiling data, and drafting methods sections.
  • Participate actively in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs, presenting data and contributing to scientific discussions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Aseptic Cell Culture Technique: Proficiency in maintaining sterile conditions for culturing and manipulating mammalian or microbial cell lines.
  • Molecular Biology Techniques: Hands-on experience with PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, and cloning.
  • Biochemical Assays: Experience with protein-based techniques like Western Blotting, ELISA, and protein quantification.
