Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance management for a team of lab technicians and assistants, including conducting regular performance reviews and fostering professional development.
  • Oversee the daily workflow, delegate tasks, and manage staff schedules to ensure efficient sample processing, timely test completion, and optimal resource allocation.
  • Act as the primary technical authority, troubleshooting and resolving complex issues with laboratory instrumentation, assays, and analytical methods, escalating to vendors or senior management as needed.
  • Manage the laboratory's comprehensive quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs, including the daily review of QC data, investigation of deviations, and implementation of corrective and preventative actions (CAPA).
  • Ensure strict and unwavering adherence to all laboratory safety protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO 17025, GLP/GMP).
  • Review, approve, and verify the accuracy of laboratory test results, ensuring data integrity and compliance with established turnaround times before final reporting.
  • Coordinate and oversee the calibration, preventative maintenance, and qualification schedules for all laboratory equipment, maintaining meticulous documentation and service records.
  • Lead the preparation for and participation in internal and external audits and inspections from regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA, CAP, state agencies), ensuring the lab is perpetually inspection-ready.
  • Facilitate the comprehensive training and ongoing competency assessment of all laboratory staff on new procedures, instrumentation, and safety protocols, meticulously documenting all training activities.
  • Manage the laboratory's proficiency testing (PT) programs, from sample receipt and analysis to result submission and thorough investigation of any discordant results.
  • Monitor key laboratory performance indicators (KPIs), such as turnaround time, error rates, and cost-per-test, generating regular performance reports for leadership.
  • Maintain and manage inventory levels for laboratory reagents, consumables, and critical supplies, ensuring uninterrupted operations through proactive ordering and effective vendor management.
  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and high-performance team environment that promotes open communication, continuous improvement, and a strong culture of quality.
  • Author, review, and revise technical documents, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and validation reports to reflect current best practices.
  • Investigate and formally document all safety incidents, near-misses, and quality non-conformances, driving root cause analysis and implementing effective, sustainable solutions.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments such as R&D, Manufacturing, and Clinical Affairs to translate their needs into actionable laboratory testing requirements.
  • Participate in budget planning and financial oversight for the laboratory, providing expert input on staffing needs, capital equipment requests, and operational expenses.
  • Lead or participate in continuous improvement projects (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) within the laboratory to optimize workflows, reduce waste, and enhance productivity.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team if the lab is integrated with larger data projects.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS): Proficiency in operating and managing LIMS for sample tracking, data entry, and reporting.
  • Regulatory & Quality Standards: In-depth knowledge of relevant standards such as CLIA, CAP, ISO 17025, GLP, and/or cGMP.
  • Advanced Instrumentation: Hands-on expertise and troubleshooting skills with specific, complex laboratory equipment (e.g., HPLC, GC-MS, NGS sequencers, automated chemistry analyzers, flow cytometers).
  • Quality Control & Assurance: Strong experience in implementing and overseeing QC/QA programs, including root cause analysis and CAPA.
  • Method Validation/Verification: Proven ability to develop, validate, and implement new laboratory procedures and analytical methods.
  • Inventory Management: Competency in managing reagent and consumable stock, including forecasting and vendor relations.
  • Technical Documentation: Skill in writing, reviewing, and maintaining clear and compliant SOPs and other technical documents.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

A minimum of 4-7 years of progressive, hands-on experience in a relevant laboratory setting, including at least 2 years in a senior, lead, or direct supervisory role.

Preferred:

  • Experience directly managing a team of 3+ lab technicians.
  • Certification from a recognized professional body (e.g., ASCP, AMT).
  • Direct experience leading a lab through a major regulatory inspection (e.g., CAP, FDA).
  • Experience with Lean/Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies in a lab environment.
