Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and oversee all daily technical and operational activities of the laboratory to ensure timely and accurate completion of testing and analysis.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of laboratory technicians, scientists, and support staff, including performance evaluations, training, and career pathing.
  • Establish, implement, and rigorously enforce laboratory policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and workflows to optimize efficiency and ensure consistency.
  • Maintain strict compliance with all relevant industry regulations and quality standards, such as ISO 17025, CLIA, CAP, GLP, and GMP.
  • Spearhead the laboratory's quality assurance and quality control programs, including proficiency testing, instrument validation, and method verification.
  • Develop and manage the laboratory's annual operating budget, overseeing procurement of supplies, reagents, and capital equipment to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Act as the primary point of contact during internal and external audits and inspections, preparing all necessary documentation and leading corrective action responses.
  • Ensure a culture of safety by implementing and monitoring adherence to all Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) protocols and procedures.
  • Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of all laboratory instrumentation, coordinating with vendors for service and repairs as needed.
  • Manage the complete sample lifecycle, from receipt and login through testing, data analysis, and final report generation, ensuring data integrity at every step.
  • Lead the investigation of out-of-specification (OOS) results and non-conformances, implementing robust Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the lab, identifying and implementing new technologies or processes to enhance throughput, reduce costs, and improve quality.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive team culture that encourages open communication, innovation, and a commitment to excellence.
  • Manage laboratory staffing schedules, assignments, and workflows to effectively balance workload and meet critical deadlines.
  • Maintain meticulous and audit-ready laboratory records, documentation, and data within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Analyze complex datasets, interpret results, and prepare comprehensive technical reports and summaries for senior management and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitate the transfer of new methods and technologies from R&D into routine laboratory operations, ensuring proper validation and training.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with key internal partners, including R&D, Manufacturing, and Quality, to ensure alignment of laboratory services with business needs.
  • Evaluate and recommend strategic investments in new laboratory equipment and systems to expand capabilities and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Represent the laboratory in cross-functional meetings and projects, providing essential technical expertise and insights.

  • Regulatory & Quality Standards: Deep, practical knowledge of relevant standards (e.g., ISO 17025, CLIA, CAP, GLP/GMP) and experience leading a lab through audits.
  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS): Proficiency in using and managing LIMS for sample tracking, data management, and reporting.
  • Team & Operational Management: Proven ability to manage staff schedules, workflows, and day-to-day lab operations to maximize efficiency.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
5-10 years of progressive experience in a clinical, research, or industrial laboratory environment, including at least 3 years in a direct supervisory or leadership role.

Preferred:
Demonstrated experience successfully managing a laboratory through one or more regulatory inspections (e.g., ISO, CAP, FDA, CLIA) is highly advantageous. Experience with LEAN or Six Sigma methodologies is a plus.
