Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously prepare, process, and label various biological or chemical samples according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure sample integrity and traceability.
  • Execute a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests and assays, such as PCR, Western Blot, ELISA, or titrations, under the direct supervision of senior lab personnel.
  • Accurately record all experimental data, observations, and results in laboratory notebooks, spreadsheets, or a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with a high degree of precision.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on standard laboratory equipment, including but not limited to centrifuges, spectrophotometers, pH meters, and microscopes.
  • Practice and promote strict adherence to all laboratory safety protocols, including the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in the preparation of reagents, buffers, and media needed for daily experiments, ensuring all solutions are made to precise specifications.
  • Perform cell culture and aseptic techniques to maintain and propagate cell lines for ongoing research projects, preventing contamination.
  • Analyze and interpret preliminary data sets, preparing simple charts and graphs to summarize findings for review by the research team.
  • Follow detailed experimental protocols and SOPs without deviation, while also learning to identify potential issues or areas for process improvement.
  • Support senior scientists in the setup and execution of more complex, non-routine experiments, gaining exposure to advanced research methodologies.
  • Conduct literature searches to gather background information for new projects and to understand the context of current experiments.
  • Perform quality control checks on samples, reagents, and equipment to ensure the reliability and accuracy of experimental results.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in maintaining and organizing laboratory supply inventory, including tracking stock levels, receiving new orders, and preparing purchase requests.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, lab safety briefings, and scientific journal club presentations to stay informed and contribute to the team's collective knowledge.
  • Contribute to the general cleanliness, organization, and upkeep of the laboratory workspace, ensuring a safe and efficient environment for all team members.
  • Support the documentation and revision of SOPs and laboratory methods as processes are refined or updated.
  • Prepare and present a summary of internship projects and findings to the department or team at the conclusion of the internship period.
  • Collaborate with other interns and team members on shared tasks and projects, fostering a cooperative and productive work environment.
  • Provide support for ad-hoc projects, pilot studies, and experiments as directed by senior scientists or the laboratory manager.
  • Aid in the proper archiving of experimental data, laboratory notebooks, and project-related documentation for future reference and regulatory compliance.

  • Pipetting: Proficiency with various types of pipettes (micropipettes, multichannel) for accurate and precise liquid handling.
  • Aseptic Technique: Understanding and practical application of sterile techniques to prevent contamination in cell culture or microbiology work.
  • Basic Lab Calculations: Ability to perform calculations for dilutions, molarity, and concentrations to prepare solutions and reagents.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Competency in using Excel for data entry and basic analysis, Word for documentation, and PowerPoint for presentations.
