- Irrigation Lead Technician
- Hardscape Specialist / Masonry Lead
Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead daily on-site operations for landscape construction projects, including assigning crew tasks, sequencing work, and ensuring all team members understand their responsibilities and safety requirements.
- Read, interpret and implement landscape construction plans, blueprints and specifications (hardscape layout, plant plans, irrigation schematics, grading plans) to execute work exactly as designed.
- Install hardscape systems such as pavers, natural stone patios, walkways, steps, raised planters, and retaining walls using appropriate leveling, jointing and compaction techniques to meet structural and aesthetic standards.
- Oversee softscape installation including tree and shrub planting, sod and seed installation, mulching, soil amendments, and proper root handling to ensure long-term plant health and design integrity.
- Install and troubleshoot irrigation systems (drip, spray, and smart controllers), including laying mainlines, lateral lines, heads, valves and controller programming to meet water-efficiency standards and design coverage.
- Perform grading, drainage and erosion-control work—cutting and filling, forming swales, installing drainage pipe and catch basins—to protect properties and direct stormwater as specified.
- Operate and maintain light construction equipment (skid steers, mini-excavators, plate compactors, saws, trenchers) safely and efficiently while coordinating equipment rentals and returns.
- Enforce company and OSHA safety policies on site, conduct daily safety briefings, identify hazards, ensure PPE use, and report incidents promptly to management.
- Conduct quality control inspections throughout the project lifecycle, identify defects or out-of-spec work, and implement corrective action to meet client expectations and company standards.
- Manage onsite materials—receive deliveries, inspect for accuracy, stage materials to minimize waste, and track inventory consumption to support cost control.
- Train, mentor and coach crew members in installation techniques, tool use, safety protocols and customer service to build a reliable, multi-skilled workforce.
- Coordinate subcontractors and specialty trades (electrical for lighting, concrete crews, arborists) to keep project schedules aligned and ensure proper integration of systems.
- Schedule and document daily progress, maintain timesheets, and report labor productivity and material usage to project managers for accurate job costing.
- Communicate proactively with project managers and clients—provide progress updates, clarify scope or design questions, document site decisions, and escalate issues that affect schedule or budget.
- Prepare and execute site protection measures (tree protection, erosion control, dust control, pedestrian barriers) to preserve existing conditions and meet municipal permit requirements.
- Implement and document start-up and close-out procedures including punch-lists, as-built notes, photo documentation, and client walkthroughs to finalize projects professionally.
- Estimate small change orders and onsite adjustments—calculate labor and materials for field modifications, obtain approvals, and track change order costs as directed by the project manager.
- Maintain tools and small equipment—perform routine maintenance, safety checks, and minor repairs to minimize downtime and extend tool life.
- Ensure compliance with local building codes, HOA requirements and permit conditions by following specifications, providing required documentation, and coordinating inspections.
- Lead remedial work and warranty repairs, diagnose plant health or installation failures, and apply corrective measures to maintain company reputation and client satisfaction.
- Implement sustainable landscape construction practices (soil health management, water-wise planting, permeable pavers and proper grading) to support environmental goals and client preferences.
- Maintain accurate site logs, photos and installation records for each job to support QA/QC, billing, and future maintenance recommendations.
Secondary Functions
- Assist project managers with material take-offs, ordering lists and coordination of bulk deliveries to reduce delays and overages.
- Participate in pre-construction site walks and client meetings to contribute field insights to scheduling, phasing and constructability reviews.
- Support training initiatives by documenting best practices, creating short job aids and onboarding new crew members to company methods.
- Provide input to estimating teams on typical labor rates, installation hours and common field challenges to improve bid accuracy.
- Help maintain company vehicle and equipment inventory—coordinate service schedules and report maintenance needs to operations.
- Respond to customer warranty inquiries or emergency calls as needed to troubleshoot issues and provide timely solutions.
