Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare and clean job sites by removing debris, vegetation, and obstacles; mark out work areas and protect existing landscaping to meet project site preparation requirements.
  • Read and interpret landscape plans, blueprints and specifications to measure, mark and lay out work accurately for planting beds, paver patios, walkways, and retaining walls.
  • Excavate trenches and holes for irrigation lines, drainage, plantings and foundations using hand tools and compact equipment, ensuring proper depths, slopes and dimensions per drawings.
  • Perform grading and soil compaction to established elevations and tolerances using rakes, shovels, plate compactors, skip loaders or grading tools to ensure proper water runoff and base stability.
  • Install base materials (crushed stone, gravel, sand) and level/screed bedding layers for pavers, concrete, and modular block systems to achieve manufacturer and project-specific compaction levels.
  • Lay pavers, flagstone, and natural stone with precision—cut, fit and set units; add jointing sand or polymeric sand; compact and finish surfaces to meet alignment and drainage requirements.
  • Construct segmental retaining walls and gravity walls: set first course, stagger blocks, maintain batter/level, backfill and install drainage components to structural and aesthetic specifications.
  • Install edging systems, curbing and concrete banding—form, place, finish and cure concrete as required; perform finishing tasks consistent with project quality standards.
  • Install irrigation systems including trenching for pipe, laying poly tubing and PVC, installing valves, heads and controllers, and performing initial system checks and adjustments.
  • Plant trees, shrubs and perennials to specified depths, apply root amendments and structural pruning, backfill and stake as needed to ensure proper establishment.
  • Install sod, seed and erosion control products; prepare seedbeds, lay sod strips, roll and water newly installed turf for early establishment and uniformity.
  • Apply soil amendments, mulch beds to specified depths, and grade topsoil to specified tolerances, ensuring planting media meets project specs and promotes plant health.
  • Operate and maintain small power equipment and light construction equipment (plate compactors, power tampers, concrete mixers, saws, mini-excavators) in a safe, inspected condition according to manufacturer guidance.
  • Mix, pour and finish concrete for small footings, curbs and hardscape elements; perform basic formwork, reinforcing placement and finishing tasks with attention to tolerances.
  • Install drainage solutions including French drains, catch basins, perforated pipe and outlet connections; ensure positive slopes and functioning discharge points to manage site water.
  • Manage material handling on-site: receive, unload, stage and protect materials (pavers, block, mulch, plants), track material counts and report shortages to foreman or superintendent.
  • Execute quality control checks during and after installation; correct deficiencies, ensure grade and alignment tolerances and document completed work per crew leader instructions.
  • Follow all site safety rules and procedures: wear PPE, participate in toolbox talks, adhere to traffic control plans and complete incident reports when necessary to maintain a safe workplace.
  • Maintain and clean hand and power tools, perform basic equipment checks and report service/repair needs; ensure vehicles and trailers are stocked and organized for daily tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, foremen and clients onsite; escalate issues, confirm scope clarifications and provide courteous professional interactions with homeowners and clients.
  • Assist with daily site cleanup and final project punch lists: remove excess materials, dispose of debris responsibly, sweep and power wash paved surfaces, and leave job site in customer-ready condition.
  • Support environmental and sustainability best practices by following erosion control measures, recycling materials when possible and minimizing damage to existing vegetation and ecosystems.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist foreman with tracking daily crew hours, material usage logs and brief job-site progress reports for payroll and invoicing accuracy.
  • Participate in pre-construction staging: assist with layout of materials, equipment positioning and temporary protection of existing site elements.
  • Support on-site customer interactions by answering basic questions, pointing out completed work and escalating requests to the project lead to enhance client satisfaction.
  • Help coordinate deliveries and offloading of large materials (stone, soil, trees) to optimize staging and reduce double handling.
  • Conduct basic site surveys for access, laydown and protective measures; identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions to foreman.
  • Assist with seasonal maintenance tasks for completed projects when requested, including irrigation winterization, seasonal mulching and minor repair work.
  • Provide cross-support to other trade crews (masonry, concrete, irrigation) as needed to maintain workflow and project schedules.
  • Participate in safety audits and suggest incremental improvements to crew safety practice and site housekeeping.
