Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct initial client consultations to ascertain their vision, functional requirements, budget constraints, and aesthetic preferences for outdoor spaces.
- Perform comprehensive site analysis and inventory, documenting existing conditions such as topography, soil composition, drainage, sun/shade patterns, and existing vegetation.
- Develop innovative and functional landscape design concepts, master plans, and illustrative graphics for client presentations and review.
- Create detailed planting plans utilizing a strong knowledge of regional plant palettes, considering seasonality, growth habits, water requirements, and long-term maintenance.
- Design hardscape elements including patios, walkways, retaining walls, water features, and outdoor lighting systems, ensuring structural integrity and aesthetic cohesion.
- Prepare complete sets of construction documents, including layout plans, grading and drainage plans, planting plans, irrigation plans, and construction details.
- Generate accurate material take-offs and cost estimates for proposed designs, assisting with project bidding and contractor selection.
- Produce high-quality 3D models, renderings, and visualizations using software like SketchUp and Lumion to effectively communicate design intent.
- Prepare and deliver compelling design presentations to clients, stakeholders, and review boards, clearly articulating the design rationale and vision.
- Select and specify appropriate materials, finishes, site furnishings, and plant materials to align with the project's design goals and budget.
- Collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, contractors, and other consultants to ensure seamless integration of the landscape design with the overall project.
- Conduct periodic site visits during the construction phase to observe progress, ensure compliance with design documents, and provide solutions to field conditions.
- Review and approve contractor submittals, material samples, and mock-ups to maintain design quality and integrity.
- Research and integrate sustainable design principles, such as water-wise irrigation, native plantings, and stormwater management techniques, into all projects.
- Manage project timelines, deliverables, and budgets to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within financial parameters.
- Stay current with industry trends, new materials, and innovative design techniques to continuously elevate the firm's work.
- Develop and maintain the firm’s library of plants, materials, and construction details.
- Prepare permit application packages and navigate the approval process with local municipalities and regulatory agencies.
- Address and resolve client concerns and design modifications throughout the project lifecycle with professionalism and creativity.
- Assist in marketing efforts by preparing portfolio materials, project sheets, and graphics for proposals and social media.
- Mentor junior designers and interns, providing guidance on design best practices and software usage.
