Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate commercial-grade walk-behind and zero-turn mowers to maintain turf across various residential and commercial properties, ensuring a clean and uniform cut.
- Perform detailed garden and bed maintenance, including weeding, cultivating soil, and applying mulch to enhance plant health and appearance.
- Execute the precise installation of softscape elements such as trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals according to landscape plans and horticultural standards.
- Assist in hardscape construction projects, which includes excavating sites, laying patio pavers, building retaining walls, and installing garden pathways.
- Conduct seasonal property clean-ups, involving the collection and removal of leaves, branches, and other organic debris to prepare grounds for the upcoming season.
- Utilize power trimmers and edgers to create sharp, clean lines along walkways, driveways, and garden beds for a polished finish.
- Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides as directed by a licensed technician, following all safety protocols and application guidelines.
- Prune small trees, hedges, and shrubs to promote healthy growth, improve shape, and ensure clearance from structures and pathways.
- Operate various pieces of light and heavy equipment, such as skid steers, mini-excavators, and sod cutters, under the supervision of a foreman.
- Participate in the installation and basic repair of landscape irrigation systems, including adjusting sprinkler heads and fixing minor leaks.
- Prepare soil for new plantings by tilling, amending with compost and nutrients, and grading to ensure proper drainage and root establishment.
- Load and unload heavy materials, tools, and equipment from work trucks and trailers daily, ensuring everything is secured for transport.
- Rake, grade, and prepare ground surfaces for the installation of new sod or for hydroseeding applications.
- Perform grounds maintenance duties including litter and debris removal from lawns, pathways, and parking areas to maintain site cleanliness.
- Assist with snow and ice removal operations during winter months, which may include shoveling, applying salt/sand, and operating snow blowers.
- Water newly installed plants, lawns, and garden beds using hoses and temporary irrigation setups to ensure their survival and establishment.
- Follow detailed project plans and specifications provided by Landscape Designers or Foremen to ensure accurate project execution.
- Maintain a constant awareness of on-site safety, proactively identifying and reporting potential hazards to the crew leader.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding project progress, material needs, and any on-site challenges.
- Adhere strictly to company policies and industry-standard safety procedures, including the proper use of all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Secondary Functions
- Perform daily cleaning, light maintenance, and inspection of all hand tools, power tools, and small equipment to ensure they are in safe, working order.
- Assist in maintaining an organized and clean inventory of materials and supplies at the company yard and on job sites.
- Provide professional and courteous interaction with clients on-site when necessary, referring any significant questions or concerns to the crew leader.
- Help document work completed, including tracking time and materials used for specific jobs as requested by the site foreman.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in the safe operation of standard landscaping equipment, including commercial mowers, string trimmers, and backpack blowers.
- Foundational knowledge of horticultural practices, including proper planting techniques, watering, and pruning methods.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks consistently, including lifting heavy objects (50+ lbs), bending, and digging for extended periods.
- Experience with basic hardscape installation techniques for patios, walkways, and retaining walls.
- Competency in using a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and pruning shears.
- Basic understanding of lawn care, including aeration, dethatching, and overseeding.
- Ability to read and interpret basic landscape design plans and follow verbal instructions accurately.
- Knowledge of workplace safety (WHMIS) and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required for driving company vehicles.
- Experience with winter maintenance operations, including shoveling and operating snow removal equipment.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
- 0-3 years of experience in a role involving physical labour. Previous experience in landscaping, construction, or farming is a strong asset but not always required.
