Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create, implement and continuously refine comprehensive landscape maintenance plans for multiple accounts, ensuring consistent mowing, edging, pruning, fertilization, pest control, mulching, seasonal color rotations and turf care that meet contract specifications and client expectations.
  • Recruit, train, mentor and lead multi-disciplinary maintenance crews (mowers, trimmers, irrigation techs, horticulturalists) while building a strong culture of safety, accountability and customer service to drive high-performance field teams.
  • Develop and manage weekly and seasonal work schedules and crew assignments that optimize labor utilization, reduce overtime, and maintain on-time service delivery across all client properties.
  • Conduct regular on-site quality assurance inspections and follow-up evaluations to ensure work meets company standards and contract deliverables; document issues, corrective actions and client sign-offs.
  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance for irrigation systems, including scheduling start-ups/shut-downs, leak detection, valve and controller troubleshooting, and coordinating repairs with irrigation specialists.
  • Interpret landscape and irrigation plans, evaluate site-specific conditions, and provide technical guidance on plant selection, drainage, soil amendments, and long-term plant health strategies.
  • Prepare, review and manage service contracts, scopes of work, change orders and seasonal addenda; ensure accurate contract compliance and maintain up-to-date documentation for all accounts.
  • Create detailed estimates and budgets for maintenance contracts, seasonal programs and capital improvement projects; monitor actual vs. budget performance and implement corrective actions to meet profitability targets.
  • Maintain responsibility for inventory management of parts, tools, fertilizers, pesticides and other consumables; coordinate purchasing, control costs, and enforce proper storage and tracking procedures.
  • Ensure strict compliance with federal, state and local regulations, including pesticide licensing and application rules, OSHA requirements, MSDS handling, and environmental best practices for chemical and waste management.
  • Implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies and plant health care protocols, including scouting, diagnosis, treatment planning and documentation to minimize chemical usage and maximize plant vigor.
  • Coordinate and manage third-party vendors and subcontractors for specialized services (tree care, deep root fertilization, aeration, mulching, hardscape repairs), ensuring scope, safety and deliverables align with client agreements.
  • Lead daily pre-shift briefings and toolbox talks to address safety topics, daily objectives, route changes, equipment issues and customer-specific instructions to reduce incidents and improve service clarity.
  • Maintain and manage fleet and grounds equipment maintenance programs, including preventive servicing, troubleshooting, repair prioritization, rental coordination, and replacement planning to minimize downtime and capital expense.
  • Utilize CRM, scheduling and route optimization software to track work orders, crew locations, performance metrics and client communications; generate weekly and monthly operational reports for leadership and clients.
  • Develop, deliver and maintain training programs for technicians covering equipment operation, pruning techniques, turf maintenance best practices, irrigation troubleshooting, chemical safety and customer service.
  • Serve as primary on-site client liaison for assigned accounts: conduct regular account review meetings, respond to client requests and complaints, provide technical advice, and develop long-term landscape enhancement plans.
  • Oversee seasonal transitions (spring startup, summer maintenance, fall cleanup, winterization) including detailed task planning, resource allocation, and proactive communication of expectations and timelines to clients.
  • Implement safety incident reporting, investigation and corrective action plans; maintain accurate OSHA logs, training records and ensure crew certifications and licenses remain current.
  • Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as account retention, labor productivity, chemical usage, and preventative maintenance completion rates; recommend process improvements to senior management.
  • Plan and manage irrigation and water usage efficiency programs, including scheduling, ET-based programming, leak prevention and recommending upgrades to conserve water and reduce client utility costs.
  • Facilitate emergency response and storm clean-up operations, mobilizing crews, coordinating equipment and working with clients to restore grounds function quickly and safely.
  • Lead landscape renovation and enhancement projects by coordinating internal crews and subcontractors, overseeing installation quality, and ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Maintain accurate operational documentation including job logs, service tickets, equipment maintenance records, incident reports and client communications to support billing, compliance and knowledge transfer.

  • Support the sales and estimating teams by providing technical input for proposals, scope clarifications and site assessments for potential new accounts and contract renewals.
  • Manage seasonal procurement planning and vendor relationships to secure materials, plant stock and equipment rentals at competitive pricing and on reliable timelines.
  • Assist in the development and rollout of sustainability initiatives such as pollinator-friendly plantings, reduced chemical programs, composting and water conservation strategies to align with client environmental goals.

  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts with landscape designers, project managers and operations to integrate maintenance considerations into renovation planning and new installations.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness planning for extreme weather events, including site risk assessments, prioritization of critical assets and post-event damage assessments.
  • Lead periodic performance reviews and provide coaching to crew leads to build leadership bench strength and succession planning for key field roles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications and strong field experience required.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or certification in Horticulture, Landscape Management, Turfgrass Science, Agronomy, or a related field.
  • Commercial pesticide applicator license, certified irrigation technician credential (e.g., CLIA, Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor), or landscape industry certifications (e.g., CLP, CLT).
