Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and oversee all daily landscape maintenance and construction operations, ensuring all contractual obligations are met safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within the established budget.
  • Develop and manage strong, long-term client relationships by serving as the primary point of contact, conducting regular site walkthroughs, and proactively addressing concerns to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and retention.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of maintenance contracts, including resource allocation, crew scheduling, and logistics to maximize efficiency and productivity across multiple job sites.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and mentor a high-performing team of landscape professionals, fostering a positive and safety-conscious work environment through effective leadership and performance management.
  • Develop and manage operational budgets, oversee profit and loss (P&L) statements for the department, and implement cost-control measures to achieve or exceed financial goals.
  • Conduct thorough site inspections and quality control audits to ensure all work performed meets or exceeds company and client standards for excellence.
  • Prepare and present proposals for landscape enhancements, upgrades, and additional services, identifying opportunities to increase revenue and improve property value for clients.
  • Ensure all operations adhere to local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental laws, pesticide application guidelines, and workplace safety standards (OSHA).
  • Manage the procurement of materials, equipment, and supplies, negotiating with vendors and suppliers to secure competitive pricing and ensure timely delivery.
  • Oversee the proper maintenance, repair, and management of all departmental vehicles, tools, and equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive horticultural programs, including fertilization, integrated pest management (IPM), and soil health strategies to ensure the vitality of turf and plant life.
  • Plan and manage seasonal services, such as spring clean-ups, fall leaf removal, and snow and ice management operations, including staffing and resource deployment.
  • Provide expert horticultural advice and solutions to clients and team members, diagnosing plant, turf, and irrigation issues and recommending effective treatments.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to job costing, labor hours, material usage, and client satisfaction, providing regular updates to senior management.
  • Lead weekly production and safety meetings with crews to communicate goals, review performance, and reinforce safe work practices.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the sales and design teams to provide operational insights during the bidding and estimating process for new projects and contracts.
  • Champion and implement sustainable landscaping practices, including water conservation strategies, native plantings, and organic care options.
  • Manage subcontractor relationships, including selection, scheduling, and quality oversight for specialized services like tree care, irrigation installation, or hardscaping.
  • Investigate and resolve any accidents, incidents, or property damage claims promptly and professionally, completing all required documentation.
  • Stay current with industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in landscape management, horticulture, and business operations.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to identify operational improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the operations team to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert Horticultural Knowledge: Deep understanding of plant identification (including native and ornamental species), soil science, entomology, and pathology for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Irrigation System Management: Proficiency in the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex commercial and residential irrigation systems, including smart controllers and water-saving technologies.
  • Financial & Budget Management: Strong ability to create, manage, and analyze departmental budgets, P&L statements, job costing reports, and financial forecasts.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Thorough knowledge of industry-specific safety standards (OSHA), environmental regulations, and requirements for pesticide/herbicide application (possessing or able to obtain relevant licenses is key).
  • Project Management: Demonstrated skill in managing the full lifecycle of landscape projects, from proposal and planning through to execution and completion, using relevant software and tools.
  • Snow & Ice Management Expertise: Proven experience in planning and executing large-scale snow and ice removal operations, including equipment and material logistics.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by significant industry experience and relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Landscape Professional, Pesticide Applicator License).

Preferred Education:

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

5-8 years of progressive experience within the commercial landscape maintenance industry, with a minimum of 3 years in a direct supervisory or management capacity (e.g., Supervisor, Account Manager).

Preferred:

Experience managing a diverse portfolio of large-scale commercial, HOA, or municipal properties with P&L responsibility. A proven track record of growing a portfolio and developing successful, long-tenured teams is highly desirable.
