Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform routine and seasonal landscape maintenance for residential and commercial properties, including mowing, edging, trimming hedges, pruning trees and shrubs, weeding, fertilizing, aeration, overseeding and turf repair to maintain safe, attractive grounds and healthy plant material.
Install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems (drip, pop-up sprinklers, controllers, solenoids and backflow devices), perform seasonal start-ups and winterizations, and troubleshoot leaks, pressure problems, and zone issues to ensure efficient water use and proper system performance.
Read and interpret landscape plans, planting schedules, planting palettes and work orders to lay out job sites, place plants, and install hardscape elements accurately according to design specifications and client expectations.
Install plant material (trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers) and perform proper planting techniques including hole preparation, root flare handling, staking, mulching and initial watering to maximize survival and long-term plant health.
Execute hardscape installations such as patios, walkways, retaining walls, edging, boulder placement, and decorative stonework, including excavation, base preparation, compaction and final grading to ensure durable, code-compliant installations.
Install sod and seed lawns, prepare soil beds, grade and level surfaces, apply soil amendments and monitor seed germination and sod establishment for consistent, high-quality turf results.
Operate and maintain landscape equipment safely and effectively, including zero-turn mowers, walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, mini-excavators, skid steers and loaders, following manufacturer guidelines and site safety procedures.
Apply fertilizers, soil amendments, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides according to integrated pest management principles and label instructions; maintain accurate application logs and comply with all pesticide regulations and licensing requirements.
Perform ongoing plant health inspections, identify common pests and diseases, recommend corrective actions or treatments, and implement cultural practices (pruning, mulching, drainage improvements) to promote resilient landscapes.
Conduct quality control inspections of completed work, correct deficiencies, ensure site cleanup, remove debris and coordinate green waste disposal or composting in accordance with environmental regulations and client requirements.
Prepare material takeoffs, assist with estimating labor and materials for projects, track usage on site, and communicate needs to supervisors or project managers to ensure projects stay on schedule and budget.
Install and maintain lighting, drainage, and erosion control features; coordinate with subcontractors (electrical, irrigation backflow testers, arborists) when specialized permits or inspections are required.
Follow all safety protocols including PPE use, lockout/tagout for equipment, hazardous material handling, and safe lifting techniques; participate in safety meetings and report incidents or near-misses immediately.
Maintain accurate field records including time sheets, material inventories, service tickets, plant warranties, and client notes using paper forms or landscape management software and mobile apps.
Provide exceptional customer service by communicating professionally with clients on-site, explaining recommended work, addressing concerns promptly, and documenting customer approvals or scope changes.
Implement seasonal programs such as spring cleanup, fall cleanup, leaf removal, snow and ice management (where applicable), and winterization tasks to protect plant material and infrastructure.
Monitor and adjust irrigation schedules based on weather, soil moisture, and plant needs to conserve water, reduce wasted irrigation, and meet municipal ordinances and sustainable landscaping goals.
Coordinate small crews: assign daily tasks, ensure proper equipment and materials are available, coach crew members on techniques and safety, and provide feedback to improve productivity and workmanship.
Perform demolition and site preparation activities including removing old plant material, breaking up and removing old hardscape or concrete, grading, and preparing sites for new installations while minimizing disturbance to existing features.
Support landscape design execution by laying out hardscape elevations, verifying grade transitions, and ensuring that drainage and site lines align with design intent and ADA or municipal requirements.
Conduct weekly property inspections for contract accounts, document service items, and proactively recommend additional services or improvements to the account manager to increase client retention and revenue.
Maintain a clean, organized inventory of hand tools, PPE, mower decks and attachments; perform preventative maintenance like sharpening blades, checking fluids, greasing fittings, and completing equipment repairs or arranging for vendor service.

Secondary Functions

Assist the estimating team by providing field measurements, material quantities, and practical installation notes to improve bid accuracy and reduce change orders.
Train new crew members and seasonal hires on company standards for landscape installation, plant handling, equipment operation, and site safety to raise team competency and reduce rework.
Participate in client walk-throughs and post-installation inspections to collect feedback, document punch lists, and coordinate corrective actions until final acceptance.
Support sustainability initiatives such as native plantings, xeriscaping, compost use, permeable surfaces and stormwater best practices to meet environmental and municipal program goals.
Coordinate with suppliers and nurseries to source plant material, check plant quality on delivery, and manage short-term staging on site to prevent plant stress.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Proven knowledge of plant identification, plant care, pruning techniques, seasonal plant needs and basic arboricultural practices.
Hands-on experience installing and servicing irrigation systems (controllers, valves, drip irrigation and pop-up sprays), including troubleshooting and controller programming.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or GED; equivalent hands-on experience in landscape maintenance and installation accepted.

Preferred Education:
