Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive groundskeeping and property maintenance duties, including mowing, trimming, and edging lawns to ensure a neat and professional appearance.
  • Operate a wide range of professional landscaping equipment, such as commercial-grade mowers, string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers.
  • Cultivate and care for gardens and plant beds by planting flowers, shrubs, and trees, as well as performing regular weeding, mulching, and pruning.
  • Assist with the installation of new landscape designs, which includes laying sod, spreading topsoil, planting, and placing decorative rock or mulch.
  • Support the construction of hardscape features, including the preparation and installation of patios, walkways, retaining walls, and other stonework.
  • Execute seasonal property maintenance tasks, such as comprehensive spring and fall clean-ups, leaf and debris removal, and core aeration.
  • Load and unload heavy equipment, tools, and materials like soil, mulch, and stone from work vehicles, ensuring they are properly secured for transport.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety protocols, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like safety glasses, gloves, and ear protection.
  • Perform daily cleaning and basic preventative maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure they are safe and in proper working order.
  • Water lawns, gardens, and newly installed plants using manual or automated irrigation systems to ensure their health and vitality.
  • Prepare sites for landscaping projects by clearing vegetation, grading terrain, and amending soil as required for optimal plant growth.
  • Interact professionally and courteously with clients on-site, answering basic questions and forwarding more complex inquiries to the Crew Leader.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with snow and ice removal operations during winter months, which may include shoveling, operating snow blowers, and applying de-icing agents.
  • Monitor landscape health, identifying and reporting any signs of pests, diseases, or environmental stress to the crew foreman for proper treatment.
  • Support the installation and minor repair of low-voltage landscape lighting systems and other outdoor fixtures.
  • Help maintain and repair irrigation systems by replacing sprinkler heads, adjusting watering patterns, and reporting leaks or system failures.
  • Ensure job sites are kept clean, organized, and safe throughout the day and are thoroughly cleared of all debris and leftover materials upon project completion.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and leaders to coordinate tasks, optimize workflow, and ensure project objectives are met on schedule.
  • Follow detailed landscape plans and blueprints to ensure accurate placement and installation of plants, hardscapes, and other design elements.
  • Report any issues with equipment performance, material shortages, or adverse job site conditions to the foreman in a timely manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of commercial mowers (zero-turn, walk-behind) and other power landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper planting techniques for various types of trees, shrubs, and perennials.
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance on small engines and landscaping tools.
  • Understanding of pruning techniques for different plant species to promote health and desired shape.
  • Experience with hardscape installation, including base preparation and paver laying.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is highly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of irrigation systems and repair.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or vocational training in Horticulture, Landscape Design, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of relevant experience. We are willing to train motivated candidates with a strong work ethic.

Preferred:

  • At least 1 year of professional experience in landscape maintenance, construction, or a related field like groundskeeping or farming.
