Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Direct and mentor a team of animators, fostering a collaborative, supportive, and high-performing team environment through regular check-ins, 1-on-1s, and career development guidance.
- Establish, maintain, and champion the quality bar for all animation within the project, ensuring that character, creature, and environmental animations are fluid, believable, and emotionally impactful.
- Review the team's work daily, providing clear, constructive, and actionable artistic and technical feedback to guide their efforts toward the project's established style and quality goals.
- Collaborate directly with the Art Director and Creative Director to define and uphold the unique animation style and an overarching motion language for the project.
- Personally create exemplary, high-quality keyframe animations for principal characters, complex sequences, and in-game mechanics to set the standard and solve challenging animation problems.
- Design, document, and refine the end-to-end animation pipeline, from asset creation and rigging hand-offs to in-engine implementation, ensuring efficiency and scalability.
- Partner with Technical Artists and Engineers to request, develop, and test new animation tools, systems, and engine features that enhance workflow and expand creative possibilities.
- Plan, schedule, and assign animation tasks, managing the team's workload to ensure timely delivery of assets while maintaining high quality and avoiding burnout.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all animation-related matters, effectively communicating team progress, dependencies, and risks to production and other department leads.
- Oversee the entire motion capture process, from planning and directing shoots to managing data cleanup and its integration into the character animation pipeline.
- Work closely with the rigging team to provide detailed feedback on character rigs, control schemes, and deformation to ensure they meet the expressive needs of the animators.
- Drive the development of character personalities and narrative arcs through distinctive posing, timing, and nuanced performance in both cinematic and gameplay animations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical and artistic challenges in the animation pipeline, from rig-breaking bugs to performance optimization issues.
- Ensure all animations are seamlessly and correctly implemented in the game engine (e.g., Unreal, Unity), working with designers to tune responsiveness and feel.
- Develop comprehensive documentation, style guides, and best-practice tutorials for the animation team to ensure consistency and help onboard new members.
- Create and oversee the creation of compelling facial animation and lip-sync performances that bring characters to life and convey powerful emotions.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert-Level Animation Software Proficiency: Mastery of industry-standard 3D animation software, primarily Autodesk Maya, with strong knowledge of 3ds Max or Blender being a significant plus.
- Advanced Animation Principles: A deep and instinctual understanding of the 12 principles of animation, with a proven ability to create weight, timing, and powerful, appealing performances in keyframe animation.
- Game Engine Integration: Extensive experience working with modern game engines, particularly Unreal Engine or Unity, including knowledge of animation blueprints, state machines, and performance profiling.

- A diverse and powerful portfolio showcasing leadership through team projects, a mastery of keyframe animation for both humanoids and creatures, and a strong sense of performance and timing.
- Experience managing both internal teams and external animation vendors.
