Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of character artists, providing constructive feedback, career guidance, and conducting regular performance reviews to foster team growth.
  • Establish and own the artistic and technical quality bar for all character models, textures, and materials, ensuring they align with the game's art direction and technical constraints.
  • Collaborate directly with the Art Director and Concept Artists to translate 2D character designs into exceptional, game-ready 3D assets.
  • Personally create benchmark character models that serve as a gold standard for the team in terms of quality, style, and technical execution.
  • Oversee the entire character creation pipeline, from initial block-out and high-poly sculpting to retopology, UV mapping, baking, texturing, and final engine implementation.
  • Drive the development and continuous improvement of character art pipelines, workflows, and toolsets in collaboration with Technical Art and Engineering teams.
  • Define and document technical specifications and best practices for character modeling, ensuring optimal performance and memory usage without sacrificing visual fidelity.
  • Actively participate in character-focused R&D, exploring new techniques, software, and technologies to keep the team at the cutting edge of the industry.
  • Review and approve all character assets at each stage of production, ensuring consistency and quality across all characters in the game.
  • Partner with Rigging and Animation leads to ensure character topology, weighting, and construction facilitate high-quality deformation and performance.
  • Manage the character art schedule and deliverables in partnership with production, accurately assessing scope, assigning tasks, and identifying potential risks.
  • Champion a culture of artistic excellence, innovation, and collaborative problem-solving within the character team and the broader art department.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for character art creation processes, style guides, and technical requirements.
  • Play a key role in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring process to build and expand a world-class character art team.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate with the marketing and cinematics teams to ensure in-game character assets are properly represented and utilized in promotional materials.
  • Provide expert guidance on the creation of character customization systems, ensuring modular pieces are compatible and meet quality standards.
  • Assist in solving complex artistic and technical challenges that arise during production, offering creative solutions to unblock the team.
  • Create detailed and visually compelling presentations to communicate character art progress and strategy to studio leadership and stakeholders.
  • Stay current with industry trends and competitor analysis, bringing fresh ideas and insights back to the team.
  • Work closely with VFX and Lighting artists to ensure characters integrate seamlessly and look their best within the game world.
  • Provide detailed feedback to outsourcing partners, ensuring external assets meet the project's strict quality and technical standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mastery of 3D sculpting software such as ZBrush or Mudbox for creating highly detailed organic and hard-surface models.
  • Expert-level proficiency in 3D modeling and retopology using tools like Maya, 3ds Max, or Blender.
  • Deep understanding of PBR texturing workflows and mastery of texturing suites like Substance 3D Painter and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Extensive experience with implementing and optimizing character assets within modern game engines, such as Unreal Engine 5 or Unity.
  • Strong knowledge of character anatomy, form, silhouette, color theory, and material definition.
  • Proven ability to develop and manage character creation pipelines, from concept to final in-engine integration.
  • Familiarity with cloth simulation software like Marvelous Designer.
  • Understanding of rigging, skinning, and character deformation principles to create animation-friendly topology.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A professional portfolio of the highest quality demonstrating a mastery of character modeling, texturing, and artistic fundamentals is required, regardless of formal education.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.F.A.) or equivalent professional certification in Fine Arts, Digital Art, Game Art, or Animation.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Game Art & Design
  • 3D Animation & Visual Effects
  • Fine Arts / Traditional Sculpture

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 8+ years of professional experience as a character artist in the video game industry.

Preferred:

  • 10+ years of experience with at least 3 years in a senior or lead artist capacity.
  • Credited on at least two shipped AAA titles in a character art role.
  • Experience managing a team of artists and overseeing a full production cycle.
