The Lead Hand (also styled Leadhand or Crew Lead) is a frontline supervisory position responsible for planning, directing and executing daily field or shop activities. The Lead Hand assigns tasks, mentors apprentices, enforces safety and quality standards, coordinates materials and equipment, and reports progress to supervisors or superintendents. This role balances hands-on trade work with people management and requires strong technical knowledge of the trade, excellent communication, and a safety-first mindset.

Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise, coordinate and assign daily tasks for a crew of tradespeople, labourers and apprentices to meet project schedules, quality standards and production targets while maintaining a safe work environment.
- Read, interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, technical drawings and work orders to ensure accurate execution of installation, maintenance, fabrication or repair work on site or in shop.
- Perform hands-on trade work (carpentry, welding, mechanical, electrical, rigging, heavy equipment operation as applicable) to support the crew, set examples and complete complex tasks beyond the skill level of junior workers.
- Conduct daily site inspections and pre-start safety checks to identify hazards, ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements, and implement corrective actions immediately.
- Lead toolbox talks, job briefings and safety meetings; document attendance and action items to reinforce safety culture and regulatory compliance (e.g., WHMIS, confined space, fall protection).
- Mentor, coach and train apprentices and less experienced crew members in best practices, safe work techniques and troubleshooting methods to build team capability and retention.
- Monitor workmanship and perform ongoing quality control checks; correct deficiencies and ensure final work meets project specifications and client expectations.
- Coordinate and schedule labour, equipment and materials with procurement, site superintendent and subcontractors to prevent downtime and maintain efficient workflow.
- Operate, inspect and maintain hand and power tools, welding equipment, lifts and heavy machinery; arrange for repairs or replacements to minimize equipment-related delays.
- Log daily progress, labour hours, equipment usage and material consumption; prepare accurate timesheets and site documentation for payroll and project reporting.
- Enforce site access controls, PPE compliance and safety protocols; investigate incidents or near-misses, complete incident reports and participate in corrective action planning.
- Liaise with project managers, subcontractors, vendors and clients to clarify scope, report progress, escalate issues and ensure timely resolution of worksite problems.
- Implement and follow lockout-tagout, isolation and energy control procedures during maintenance and shutdowns to protect personnel and equipment.
- Plan and execute small-scale project phases or maintenance jobs, including sequencing of tasks, resource allocation and coordination with inspections and third-party specialists.
- Conduct measurements, layout and marking to ensure accurate fits and alignments for installations, welds and assemblies according to engineering tolerances.
- Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis on mechanical, electrical or structural failures and develop practical remediation plans to restore operations quickly.
- Maintain a clean, organized and compliant worksite: waste disposal, spill control, material storage and erosion control measures where applicable.
- Support commissioning and handover activities, assist with punch-list completion and ensure all documentation (as-built drawings, manuals, test records) is completed and filed.
- Supervise or assist with emergency shutdowns, repairs and rapid response tasks to minimize production loss or ensure public and worker safety.
- Uphold union agreements, collective bargaining provisions and site-specific labor rules when applicable, and work collaboratively with union stewards or HR.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process improvements, productivity gains and cost-saving measures, and participating in lessons-learned sessions.
- Ensure environmental compliance for site activities including proper handling of hazardous materials, spill prevention, permit adherence and remediation actions.
Secondary Functions
- Assist supervisors with daily planning, progress forecasting and short-term scheduling to align crew activities with project milestones.
- Help prepare materials lists, requisitions and inventory counts to ensure timely availability of supplies and minimize stoppages.
- Participate in job site orientation, onboarding and performance feedback for new hires and contractors to accelerate integration and ensure standards are met.
- Support management in disciplinary discussions and performance improvement plans by providing factual observations and documented examples of work performance.
- Maintain equipment logs, maintenance records and calibration certificates; coordinate with maintenance teams for preventive maintenance and repairs.
- Attend project meetings, safety committees and coordination sessions to represent the crew, communicate challenges and provide input on resource needs.
- Provide input to the estimating team on labor hours, material usage and site conditions during bid preparation or change order negotiation.
- Assist with inventory control and surplus material disposition, including tagging, storage best practices and return-to-vendor when applicable.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Preferred Education:
- Trade certification (completed apprenticeship) or Red Seal certification
- Certificate in supervisory training, safety (e.g., STCW, NEBOSH, or local OHS course) or a relevant diploma
Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
- 3 to 10+ years of hands-on trade experience with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

- 5+ years of progressive trade experience, demonstrated leadership on multiple projects/sites, and experience with safety leadership, crew development and project coordination. Union experience or prior site foreman experience is a plus.
