Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the on-site installation of residential and commercial HVAC systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, VRF/VRV systems, and rooftop units.
  • Lead, mentor, and provide direct supervision to a team of HVAC installers and apprentices, delegating tasks effectively to ensure project workflow is efficient and deadlines are met.
  • Interpret and execute complex installation plans from blueprints, submittals, and engineering specifications, ensuring every component is installed according to design.
  • Perform the most technically demanding aspects of an installation, including precise setting of equipment, advanced ductwork fabrication, and flawless refrigerant line connections.
  • Execute high-quality brazing and soldering of copper piping to create durable, leak-free refrigerant circuits that stand the test of time.
  • Manage all aspects of refrigerant handling, including evacuation, charging, and recovery, in strict compliance with EPA regulations and safety standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive system start-ups and commissioning procedures, running diagnostics and performance tests to verify that the system operates at peak efficiency.
  • Serve as the primary on-site authority and point of contact for customers, general contractors, and other trade partners, providing clear, professional communication and progress updates.
  • Proactively troubleshoot and resolve any unforeseen issues that arise during installation, making decisive, on-the-fly adjustments to maintain project momentum and quality.
  • Enforce uncompromising adherence to all local, state, and federal building codes, as well as company-specific quality and safety protocols (including OSHA standards).
  • Actively train and develop junior installers and apprentices, demonstrating proper techniques, explaining the "why" behind procedures, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Manage project logistics on the ground, including coordinating material deliveries, staging equipment, and maintaining a clean, organized, and secure worksite.
  • Complete and submit all required project documentation accurately and on time, including daily work logs, change orders, commissioning reports, and as-built drawings.
  • Champion a culture of safety by conducting daily job site safety briefings (toolbox talks), enforcing the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and identifying potential hazards.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate closely with the sales and design teams during the pre-construction phase to review plans, provide practical feedback, and ensure project feasibility and profitability.
  • Maintain the company-provided vehicle and its inventory, ensuring it is well-stocked, organized, and that all tools and equipment are in safe, working order.
  • Provide exceptional customer hand-offs, patiently walking clients through their new system's operation, thermostat controls, and recommended maintenance schedule.
  • Assist in the performance review process for team members, providing honest and constructive feedback on their technical skills and professional development to the Field Supervisor.
  • Stay current on emerging HVAC technologies, new installation methods, and evolving industry regulations to maintain a position as a technical expert.
  • Read and interpret intricate wiring diagrams to correctly wire both low-voltage control circuits and line-voltage power connections for all system components.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced HVAC System Installation: Proven mastery in installing a wide range of systems (e.g., variable speed, multi-stage, VRF, geothermal).
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: The ability to read, understand, and execute complex mechanical plans and wiring diagrams.
  • Ductwork Fabrication & Design: Expertise in sheet metal, duct board, and flexible duct installation, including sizing and airflow principles.
  • Refrigerant Management: A deep understanding of the refrigeration cycle, charging techniques, and leak detection. An active EPA 608 Universal Certification is required.
  • Brazing & Soldering: High-level skill in creating clean, strong, and leak-proof joints on copper piping.
  • Electrical Wiring & Troubleshooting: Competency with both low-voltage control circuits and high-voltage power connections.
  • System Commissioning & Diagnostics: The ability to properly start up equipment, measure performance (static pressure, superheat, subcooling), and balance airflow.
  • Code Compliance: Strong working knowledge of IMC (International Mechanical Code), NEC (National Electrical Code), and local building codes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from an accredited HVAC/R vocational program or technical college.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-7+ years of dedicated, hands-on experience in residential and/or commercial HVAC installation.

Preferred: A minimum of 2 years of experience in a formal or informal lead capacity, where you were responsible for guiding other installers and managing job sites.
