Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and direct a crew of painters on-site, assigning daily tasks and ensuring efficient workflow to meet or exceed project deadlines.
  • Perform and oversee all aspects of high-quality surface preparation, including scraping, sanding, filling, patching, caulking, and priming on various substrates like drywall, wood, and metal.
  • Apply paints, stains, varnishes, epoxies, and other finishes using a full range of application tools, including brushes, rollers, and advanced spray equipment (airless, HVLP).
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for clients, project managers, and other trade professionals, ensuring clear, consistent, and professional communication.
  • Enforce and strictly adhere to all company and OSHA safety standards, conducting daily safety briefings and ensuring all crew members utilize proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Interpret blueprints, project specifications, and work orders to determine material needs, color schemes, and application methods.
  • Conduct thorough quality control inspections throughout all phases of a project to guarantee work meets or exceeds company and client expectations for a flawless finish.
  • Expertly mix and tint paints and stains to achieve custom colors and ensure batch-to-batch consistency across large surfaces.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve on-site challenges, such as unexpected surface imperfections, adverse weather conditions, or equipment malfunctions, with minimal disruption.
  • Provide hands-on training and development for junior painters, teaching advanced techniques, safety protocols, and efficient work habits to build a stronger team.
  • Oversee the proper setup and breakdown of the job site, including the meticulous protection of surrounding surfaces, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment for the entire crew throughout the duration of the project, setting a professional standard.
  • Execute complex and detailed finishing work, including intricate trim, clean cut-ins, and multi-color schemes, with exceptional precision and a steady hand.
  • Manage the operation and routine maintenance of all painting equipment, including sprayers, power washers, and sanders, ensuring they are clean and in good working order.
  • Perform final project walk-throughs with clients or supervisors to ensure complete satisfaction and create a punch list for any necessary touch-ups.
  • Accurately estimate time and material requirements for specific tasks and small-scale projects to assist with bidding and resource planning.
  • Uphold a professional demeanor and appearance on the job site, setting a positive example of the company's values for the entire crew.
  • Document project progress by completing daily logs that track work completed, hours logged, and materials used.
  • Drive company vehicles to and from job sites, ensuring they are properly loaded with the necessary equipment and materials for the day's work.
  • Coordinate with other construction trades on-site (e.g., electricians, carpenters) to ensure painting work is sequenced correctly and not compromised by other activities.
  • Identify and recommend appropriate products and application methods for different surfaces and environmental conditions, such as interior, exterior, or high-moisture areas.
  • Manage the proper handling, storage, and disposal of paints, solvents, and other chemical materials in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the recruitment and interviewing process for new painters and apprentices.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of company processes, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain an accurate, real-time inventory of paints, tools, and supplies, coordinating with management for timely procurement.
  • Provide clear and concise daily or weekly progress reports to the Project Manager or Operations Manager.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expertise in a wide range of paint application techniques, including brushing, rolling, and airless/HVLP spraying.
  • Advanced proficiency in color theory, custom color mixing, and stain matching to meet precise specifications.
  • Deep knowledge of surface preparation methods for diverse materials (wood, drywall, metal, plaster, concrete).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders.
  • Comprehensive understanding of different paint types, coatings, and their appropriate uses (latex, oil, epoxy, urethanes).
  • Skilled in the operation, cleaning, and maintenance of professional painting equipment, including sprayers and power washers.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA safety standards, hazardous material handling, and PPE requirements.
  • Competency in performing high-quality drywall, plaster, and wood repairs prior to painting.
  • Certified or experienced in the safe erection and use of scaffolding, lifts, and ladders.
  • Experience with applying specialty finishes, such as faux finishes, lacquering, or cabinet refinishing.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a Vocational or Trade School in Painting, Decorating, or a related construction field.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-7+ years of professional painting experience in a commercial or residential setting.
