Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Own and define the end-to-end QA strategy and test approach for assigned products, translating product requirements into measurable quality objectives and acceptance criteria.
  • Lead and manage the QA delivery plan for releases, coordinating with Product, Engineering, DevOps, and Support to ensure test coverage, traceability, and timely execution.
  • Architect, develop, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks (UI, API, integration, regression) that integrate with CI/CD pipelines and support parallelization and test data management.
  • Implement and enforce quality gates in CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI), including automated unit, integration, functional, and smoke test suites to prevent regression in production.
  • Drive test design for complex features, including end-to-end flows, microservices interactions, database verification, and external integrations; ensure automated and manual tests validate non-functional requirements.
  • Lead API testing strategy (REST, GraphQL, gRPC), building automated contract tests, schema validation, and service-level assertions to catch integration defects early.
  • Establish and execute performance and load testing plans using tools such as JMeter, Gatling, or k6, analyze results, and collaborate with Engineering to identify and remediate bottlenecks.
  • Define and oversee security testing activities (SAST/DAST tools, dependency scanning, vulnerability validation, penetration testing coordination) and ensure remediation workflows are in place.
  • Create and maintain test plans, test cases, test data strategies, and traceability matrices; ensure teams consistently update and review test artifacts as requirements evolve.
  • Drive defect lifecycle management: triage, prioritize, assign, and verify fixes while maintaining clear communication to stakeholders on defect impact and release readiness.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop QA engineers and SDETs—conduct regular 1:1s, performance feedback, knowledge transfer sessions, and technical training to grow team capability.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners and Business Analysts to clarify acceptance criteria, define edge cases, and ensure testability of requirements during backlog grooming and sprint planning.
  • Advocate for quality-focused metrics and reporting (test coverage, pass/fail rates, defect density, escape rate, mean time to detect/resolve) and present actionable insights to leadership.
  • Lead test environment management—coordinate provisioning, configuration, and stability of test environments, test data sanitation, and feature toggles to enable reliable testing.
  • Drive automation-first approach by identifying repetitive manual test scenarios for automation, calculating ROI for automation work, and prioritizing automation backlog.
  • Coordinate release readiness reviews, sign-offs, and rollbacks by validating acceptance criteria and ensuring all quality gates and compliance checks are complete.
  • Promote and implement continuous improvement initiatives (root cause analysis, post-incident reviews, retrospectives) to reduce defect recurrence and improve delivery velocity.
  • Collaborate with DevOps to enable shift-left testing practices—integrate static analysis, unit tests, and early integration tests into developers’ workflows to detect issues earlier.
  • Evaluate and recommend new testing tools, test data management platforms, observability and logging enhancements, and test infrastructure investments to increase efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with industry and regulatory standards relevant to the product (PCI-DSS, HIPAA, SOC2) by embedding compliance checks into test plans and collaborating with Security and Legal teams.
  • Lead cross-team exploratory testing sessions and usability validation to uncover edge-case behaviors and provide qualitative feedback to product and design teams.
  • Manage QA capacity planning and resource allocation—balance manual vs automated testing needs, vendor engagements for specialized testing, and sprint-level priorities.
  • Serve as the escalation point for critical production incidents related to quality, coordinate post-mortems, and track corrective actions until closure.
  • Maintain clear, concise, and timely communication with stakeholders about test progress, risks, mitigation plans, and release quality status.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc QA automation requests and exploratory testing for urgent customer issues and hotfixes.
  • Contribute to the organization's QA strategy and roadmap by proposing tooling, staffing, and process improvements aligned with business goals.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate product and compliance needs into test requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Participate actively in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and other Agile ceremonies to align QA activities with delivery cadence.
  • Assist in vendor selection and management for outsourced testing, security assessments, and performance labs.
  • Lead internal QA knowledge-sharing initiatives, brown-bag sessions, and cross-functional training to uplift overall testing capability.
