Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, execute, and lead end-to-end research initiatives across the entire product lifecycle, from foundational discovery and generative research to iterative concept testing and post-launch evaluation.
  • Develop and own the comprehensive user research roadmap, proactively identifying and prioritizing high-impact research questions that align with product goals and business objectives.
  • Act as a key strategic partner to leadership in product, design, and engineering, using research insights to influence long-term vision and strategic decision-making.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide guidance to junior and mid-level UX researchers, fostering their professional growth and ensuring a high standard of research quality across the team.
  • Synthesize complex, multi-source data (e.g., qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, analytics, market reports) into cohesive, actionable insights and strategic recommendations.
  • Champion and evangelize a user-centered design process throughout the organization, powerfully advocating for user needs in cross-functional meetings, planning sessions, and executive reviews.
  • Masterfully communicate and present research findings through compelling storytelling, detailed reports, journey maps, personas, and workshops to diverse audiences, from C-suite executives to individual engineers.
  • Innovate on and scale the team's research practices by developing new methodologies, refining existing processes, and introducing cutting-edge tools to improve efficiency and impact.

  • Lead the design and moderation of large-scale, complex, and often ambiguous research projects that tackle the most challenging business and user problems.
  • Define and track key UX metrics and behavioral analytics in partnership with data science teams to measure the impact of design solutions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Plan and manage all logistical aspects of research projects, including budget allocation, participant recruitment strategies, scheduling, and vendor management.
  • Evaluate the user experience of competitive and analogous products through heuristic evaluations and in-depth analysis to inform design strategy and identify market opportunities.
  • Drive the operational excellence of the research function, including tool selection and procurement, process documentation, and privacy compliance.
  • Facilitate collaborative workshops and ideation sessions with cross-functional teams to translate raw research insights into tangible product and design concepts.
  • Act as the primary research authority and point of contact for a major product area or business unit, building deep domain expertise and trusted relationships with stakeholders.

Secondary Functions

  • Support product marketing teams by providing user insights that inform go-to-market strategies, value propositions, and customer messaging.
  • Contribute to the creation of internal training materials and resources to help democratize research skills and empower non-researchers to conduct basic studies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep expertise in a wide range of qualitative research methods, including ethnographic field studies, contextual inquiry, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and diary studies.
  • Strong proficiency in quantitative research methods, including survey design, questionnaire development, sampling methods, and statistical analysis.
  • Mastery of usability testing and user feedback methodologies, with extensive experience using remote and in-person testing platforms (e.g., UserTesting.com, Maze, Lookback).
  • Proven ability to synthesize vast amounts of qualitative and quantitative data into clear, concise, and compelling research artifacts like personas, journey maps, and evidence-based reports.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

  • Proven track record of formally or informally mentoring other researchers and elevating the quality of a team's research practice.
