Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Sorts and sequences mail and parcels for an assigned delivery route, ensuring all items are organized efficiently for delivery according to the established line of travel.
  • Delivers mail, packages, and other postal items to residential and business addresses along a prescribed route, utilizing a satchel, pushcart, or postal vehicle.
  • Operates a postal service vehicle, such as a Long Life Vehicle (LLV) or van, in a safe and courteous manner, adhering to all traffic laws and postal regulations.
  • Utilizes a handheld scanner to manage and record delivery information, including package tracking, delivery confirmations, and signature captures for accountable mail.
  • Collects outgoing mail from mailboxes, businesses, and collection boxes, and accepts prepaid packages from customers on the route.
  • Obtains signatures from recipients for registered, certified, insured, and other types of accountable mail, ensuring proper protocols are followed.
  • Loads and unloads mail and parcels from postal vehicles, trays, and sorting cases, involving frequent lifting, carrying, and bending.
  • Navigates the delivery route by walking for extended periods, climbing stairs, and traversing various terrains in diverse and often challenging weather conditions.
  • Interacts professionally and courteously with customers, answering their questions about postal services, providing delivery information, and resolving minor issues.
  • Forwards mail for customers who have filed a change of address and ensures undeliverable mail is properly handled and returned to the post office.
  • Sells and cashes postal money orders and sells stamps and other postal products to customers on the delivery route when required.
  • Ensures the security and sanctity of all mail and postal equipment entrusted to their care, from the station to the point of delivery and back.
  • Maintains accurate records of deliveries, including C.O.D. (Collect on Delivery) transactions, and completes all necessary forms and reports at the end of a shift.
  • Cases mail by inserting it into the correct slots in a sorting case, a process that requires strong memory and attention to detail to ensure accurate sequencing.
  • Identifies and reports any safety hazards, public safety issues, or unusual circumstances observed along the delivery route to a supervisor.

Secondary Functions

  • Performs routine pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the assigned postal vehicle to ensure it is safe and operational, reporting any defects immediately.
  • Assists other carriers by delivering portions of their routes during periods of heavy mail volume or staff shortages to ensure timely service for all customers.
  • Maintains a neat, clean, and professional appearance, wearing the official postal uniform in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Stays current with changes in postal regulations, delivery procedures, and safety protocols through regular training and communication.
  • Prepares and separates mail to be routed to other delivery units and assists with general mail handling and processing duties within the post office as needed.

  • Safe Driving: Possession of a valid state driver's license and a safe driving record, with the ability to operate various vehicle types in diverse traffic and weather conditions.
  • Physical Stamina & Strength: Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods, and to lift and carry mailbags and packages weighing up to 70 pounds.
  • Route Sequencing: Competency in casing mail and organizing items in the precise order of delivery for a specific route, often from memory or with route aids.
  • Scanner & Technology Use: Proficiency in using handheld electronic devices (scanners) for tracking, data entry, and communication.
  • Basic Financial Transactions: Ability to handle cash and process payments accurately for services like C.O.D. and the sale of postal products.
